Meldrick Taylor vs Hector Camacho

    I don't ever remember any talk about about a possible fight between these guys..Yet Meldrick was the IBF LWW champ from 88-90, While Hector held the WBO from 89-91. Was there ever any talk about these 2 guys getting it on or why not? Why did this fight not come off? And who would win this fight and how?

    Would have been an interesting fight. Camacho was always an underated fighter in my opinion. Only hang up I can see is King promoted Camacho and Main Events promoted Taylor.

    I think peak Camacho befuddles Meldrick with lightening speed for a comfortable UD.

    i love taylor but in camachos defense .. he isn't going to go in a straight line getting tagged over and over by taylor like chavez did

    Meldrick is a greater fighter. I respect him more than Hector. He fought the best even though he lost. Hector lost also but he also cherrypicked and padded his record. In a head to head fight I pick Taylor.

    i think comacho was lined up after mel toook julio's zero. also if you wanted to look good against 2 unbeaten fighters and you have either a very effective slugger or a slick/flashy fighter you would choose the slugger if you have the superior speed and technique.

    even tho 2 very good fighters i think it would be pretty boring maybe some good rounds of action but nothign really incredible.

    taylor and comacho would start off slow trying to fient there man into attacking. until about round 4 or so when taylor notices he might get out boxed starts to press the gas and thus becomes a very fast but jabable target for the comacho right hand. by about round 7 or 8 taylor is possibly behind on the cards and either goes to swarm comacho to pull it out the fire by outhustling him to the bell or goes back to jabbing and moving which i dont think he can win.

    gets to the end with a pretty unconclusive fight but with comacho looking more effective at what he is doing. a sd to comacho

    I'll take Taylor. I'll call the handspeed even. Neither guy was a big banger. The difference to me is that Taylor just worked harder in a fight and would've wanted it more and outhustled Camacho. Camacho would've tried to steal rounds and eek out a win but I think Meldrick would've been too busy for him.

    I agree with vantage_west that this has potential to be a boring (in the eyes of many) or tacticle affair. I disagree that Taylor would wait 4 rds to get started. taylor always liked to fight a style that called for a bigger punch than he possessed, and was all to willing to chase a man and play the stalker...and in this fight against Camacho he almost certainly would have to take that role. Camacho was excelant at slipping in and out and even off of the back foot. It was around this time that Camacho fought mancini....and while I thought Mancini won the fight, Camacho did just that. Now meldrick is not going to be able to apply the kind of pressure that Mancini did, nor do I think he would be as effective at cutting off the ring. Meldrick could sit back and let this become a tacticle counter-punch affair (Not likely), or Camacho could discover he could take meldricks power (probably could) and get more aggresive than recent fights (again I doubt it). So I picture a stalking meldrick, and a darting camacho with a pretty close call in hand speed. I hate to pick it, but I lean towards vantage_west again with a Camacho split decision.

    I remember watching Howard Davis (who was fast as hell) vs Hector Camacho. Turned out that Camacho was quite a bit faster than Davis. Based on that fight and that Camacho is a southpaw, I think I think Camacho out speeds Taylor to a decision.

    Davis was MILES past his best and fastest by this time. He would have given a better account of himself 3 or 4 years earlier.

    Taylor might beat Camacho in 1988 or '89 at 140 pounds.... Taylor was hot and ready then, while Camacho was jackin' off........

    By 1992 upward at 147 to 154 pounds, Camacho schools Taylor pretty easy...... Taylor was shot by 1994....... Camacho the better / greater fighter.......

    Interesting to see how Taylor would respond to Camacho's skill and craft. That's the big intangible in this fight IMO.
