Meldrick Taylor vs Julio Cesar Chavez: Right Call or Not?

Maybe I'm ******ed, but it seems you have Taylor up by 3. Maybe I'm just out of it today...

 

Nah it was me. When I swapped the third round, I assumed it was just a one point difference but of course a 10-9 to 9-10 is a two point shift because I'm not only adding one to Taylor, but taking one off Chavez. My fault.

 

Okay good, I was thinking about checking myself into an insane asylum for a second.

 

I respect Steele's stoppage. Taylor wasn't responding and Steele is not a timekeeper.

 

The referee's job is to ensure the safety of the fighters, not ensure somebody wins in a given scenario.

The emotional quotient needs to be removed when discussing the stoppage in this particular instance.

 

Moving up in weight sealed his fate. Why on Earth would a speedy, low power fighter move up in weight?? He was slower a foot, slower in hand speed. His punches had even less effect & he felt the power of bigger hitters even more. Recipe for disaster.

I've just watched this fight again & IMO taylor's flashy combo's were being blocked 3/5 & Chavez really was dishing out some subtle punishment in every round, ****in relentless, all props to Taylor but from round 9 onwards chavez was really planting some sickener's into Meldrick, ****in brutal, he never missed with the right hand. Now i've got 4 rounds even but Chavez/Taylor could have pinched one each so i still have it just 1 point coming in the last.

Watch it with the volume down as the commentary can distract you.

No way Taylor wins the 11th, even if the punch stats said equal that would be concealing the fact that every time Chavez landed 90% were power shots & he rarely missed all night or in the 11th & as we now know the damage is there for all to see. As i said there's proberbly 2 rounds that Taylor may have pinched but i'am not so sure after watching this fight again this afternoon.

 

Rubber Warrior has it right imo.The referee's primary concern is the safety of the two fighters,he is not a time keeper.Steele took a lot of flak for this fight but ,imo he made the right call according to his judgement ,and conscience.Taylor was diminished by Chavez ,not the referee.

 

Right call. Taylor was damaged. Should have stopped it sooner.

 

And turn the sound off if you have trouble being objective. It wasn't as if Taylor was walking away with the fight. The announcers get real carried away. Chavez mugged Taylor.

 

I've got the "Bob Sheridon" comedy classic commentary, i like the feller but he really pumped it out for Taylor, oh! Meldricks combo's really caught the eye & were as flashy as they come + he was taking the fight to Chavez ect ect & at ringside it all looked the biz. Sure he connected with about 2 out of every 6 he threw but that Chavez right hand is a radar guided killer, time & time again it crashed into Taylors face & that was only mentioned twice by Sheridon.

But as we know on closer anylisis it was a savage beating that Taylor took or inflicted on himself by trying to out macho Chavez around 4/5/6, at the end of the 6th he really started to look damaged

It reminds me of the similarity in commentry of the Leonard/Duran 1 Montreal fight when Leonard is getting battered, all the commentaters would do was mostly praise anything Leonard threw back as fistic genius, never mind the fack that Duran was landing at will & dominating Leonard.

There's definitly a sub-concious/concious bias here with regard to U.S commentators towards their own as the similarities between the coverage of Chavez/Taylor & Duran/Leonard 1 are there for all to here.

First of all, it doesn't happen just about everywhere. There are hometown decisons just about everywhere. But US announcers are much worse than announcers in other countries.

Second of all, even if it were true, this wouldn't change the relevance of the point. It wouldn't make it okay.

You must avoid this form of argument, Bill: "All politicians are liar." No, not all politicians are liars, but, even if it were true, does that mean it's okay for the politician I am criticizing to lie? No, of course it doesn't.

You can't neutralize a point by smearing everybody in your imagination.

It remains true, and very important, that the announcers in both Chavez-Taylor and Duran-Leonard were highly biased towards the fighter that ultimately had his ass thoroughly kicked.
