Just sad.. Taylor had this fight in the bag if it wasn't for that ****er steele. Although he took massive punishment, had he got this decision, he wouldnt have got mentally ****ed up.
topic's been done to death on here but will probably still reach 20 pages so **** it I'll play along. A championship fight is 12 rounds, 12 full rounds, not 11 rounds 2 minutes and 50 seconds. Chavez scored a KO within the alloted time. the stoppage was correct
Taylor's career wouldn't have that much different win or lose. Hell, I don't even think his career would've been much different with or without Chavez. He has weight problems @ 140 and goes up to 147. He has some success, but is short and stocky for the weight, lacks power, and is always brawl-happy. And 147 was deep in talent with guys who could hit, naturally bigger men than Taylor.
I can see both sides to the argument and don't really take sides on this debate. What I do take a stronger side on is that I place a good deal of blame on Lou Duva for distracting Taylor when Steele was asking him important questions.
Ater that fight taylor was not the same, even tough he was winning that fight and outboxing chavez,he took high volume of unches on the inside and during the fight he swallowed a lot blood
Agree.........what the **** was Duva doing up on the ring apron. Taylor never responded but Steele shouldn't have looked so happy to wave the fight over. Him smiling with a shattered Taylor was ****ed.
He was not the same, still very good, but not 100% of what he was. But even if he were, I can't picture him having anything other than a short stay at the top of the sport. What goes different? He's still a small-ish welterweight without a big punch, and is brawl-happy. He wins a title against Davis, but the tall and rangy Espana is always a terrible style matchup for Taylor. Norris? Another terrible matchup for Taylor. And in short time, guys like Trinidad and Quartey were about to rise to the top at WW. Do people see Taylor doing well against Tito and Ike? I sure don't.
All the rematch showed was that Taylor was the more declined of the two declined fighters by 1994, and how desperate Taylor had gotten for a big fight and rematch after saying over and over again that he would only rematch Chavez at WW, after claiming that he was drained as hell in the latter rounds of the first fight. Taylor actually did better than most people expected, but even then, you could see the way he reacted when a hard punch would land upstairs. It wasn't good.
