A referee's job is to protect the fighter, and in that instant Taylor didn't respond. He was possibly hurt, and you have to make sure the fighter is not injured. The stoppage was valid.
I am not sure if Meldrick taylor would have lost convincingly in the rematch had was declared the winner in the first match. That stinging close TKO loss in the final round of a very brutal bloody and draining battle really took something out of Taylor's psyche, which showed in the rematch. He was ruined, mentally and physically.
Agree, If goddamn Lucian Bute got win in his first match against Librado Andrade. IMO Meldrick should have gotten those few seconds.:-( But I dont take anything away from Chavez.
Taylor had simply declined more than Chavez by the rematch, which was 4 and a half years later. Taylor had performed so poorly in 1992 that Lou Duva publicly refused to work with him anymore after the Cristano Espana fight. I can't see how much that has to do with the disappointment of losing the Chavez fight: Taylor was never going to move above WW and beat Terry Norris, he always would've been at a terrible style disadvantage against Espana, and was always going to have trouble against the naturally bigger, harder hitting WWs.
Everyone remembers this fight and Tyson-Ruddock 1...the Keith Holmes-Quincy Taylor fight (on the undercard of Tyson-Bruno 2) was pretty bad. That stoppage was just...:huh
If it's not a written rule, then there's no reason for the ref to follow it. Steele didn't know how long was left, Taylor had been taking a beating throughout the fight and was busted up, then Chavez caught him perfectly. And the fact is that Taylor did not respond to Steele's questions. Duva cried about it in the interview saying that Taylor nodded when he clearly didn't. He got shown the video, which showed that Taylor did NOT respond, so Steele stopped the fight. It's only controversial because people can see it in hindsight. But the portrayal of that fight as some sort of shutout for Taylor with a corrupt ending is just fantasy. Chavez was busting Taylor up from the third round on. The HBO crew, including Leonard, were just ignoring Chavez's work. Merchant at least made the point that Chavez was doing damage.
Correct stoppage. Taylor wasn't responding to questions and Steele (as the cliche goes) is not the timekeeper.
he isnt the time keeper but he knew there were ten seconds left and after that knockdown even less time. alotta big IFS here.
If Taylor had gotten a gift from Steele because it was the last ten seconds, something that would be unfair for example in the 11th round, how could that be OK? If Taylor had won the fight, it would have shown the limitations of the scoring system. He landed beautifully for 9 - 10 rounds, but his punches didn't slow down Chavez. What Chavez landed was far less flashy but broke Taylor apart. Chavez didn't even look like he was in a fight afterwards, Taylor was physically broken, fractured face, pissed pure blood. Chavez beat Taylor in a fight, Taylor could have won a glove - fencing match where only the contact counts and not the effect it has.
yep, he knows there is less than 10 seconds but if he lets Taylor continue Steele has to know exactly how much time there is left and then try to figure out if Chavez can get across the ring in 2 seconds and there are 4 left on the clock, if it takes Chavez 3 seconds and there are 6 left on the clock etc. etc. Its not his call to make, Steele just has to assess whether Taylor is fit to continue at that moment and he decided that he wasn't.
I dont know this situation had a lot of things going on....Duva jumping on the apron and distracting him was stupid plus it could have disqualified Taylor ..Steele should have been more aware of the time, and Taylor not responding didnt help matters either....
