I've watched their 1st fight many times and while Taylor was doing well, Chavez was landing many clean hard effective punches that the HBO commentators refused to acknowledge. Just look at their faces in the 12th round, Chavez barely had a scratch while Taylor's face was badly swollen and he was bleeding from his mouth. I'm glad Richard Steele stopped the fight cuz it was Chavez that would have gotten robbed by the judges.

i just watched the fight a few hours ago and it seemed to be atleast 10 rounds for Taylor ....he also seemed to be doing just as good a job on the inside and of going to the body as Chavez .

It was hard for me to accept that he was behind the cards at the time, given that Chavez put a beating on him that he never recovered from, but when it comes down to it, punches landed is about 60% of what a fight is judged on. You can make the argument for effective aggression when more power punches are landed, or there are knockdowns, the other guy is just running, etc. Defense rounds it out. But in the end, Meldrick was winning.

Similar I guess to the recent Wilder-Fury debacle, although Chavez did light years better than that idiot.

Yes he was, my only concern which came to true was he didn't seem to hurt Chavez though he was landing cleanly throughout the fight. I thought it could come back to hurt him and unfortunately for him it did.

I don't remember exactly how I was scoring it while watching it live of course, but I remember that I thought Taylor took an early lead but then Chavez was closing the gap. I definitely remember realizing that Chavez was going to need a KO to win it because there just weren't enough rounds left to pick up enough points, but that if it had been 15 rounds, he could have at least pulled out a draw. So I think I'd have had Taylor up by 2 or 3 points if the fight hadn't been stopped.

I thought Taylor was winning comfortably but every round Chavez was taking a piece of him. One guy is throwing blazing fast combos while the other guy gets a few shots in that are considerably harder. The flaw for Taylor was he had so little power. I mean he didn’t run around & try to steal rounds. He fought in close and landed plenty of good shots. He couldn’t even move Chavez. Whitaker seemed to I mpact Chavez more in their fight.

Guy with no power against a guy with a granite chin is a tough matchup. Taylor fought a little too macho for his own good but he definitely got my respect.

Sportswriter William Nack said that Taylor had "his prime beaten out of him that night!"...and Dr.Flip Homansky said that Taylor had facial fractures...was urinating pure blood...his face was grotesquely swollen...and that he was beaten up to "the face...the body...and the brain!"

There was nothing close about the scoring of this fight. Taylor was comfortably ahead. As I said before, it's exaggerated how badly Taylor was hurt in this fight. People act like he was on death's door and never recovered to justify why the fight was stopped. In reality there doesn't need to be a justification or exaggerating of how badly Taylor was hurt, the ref made a judgment call and was within his right to make that call. We don't need to justify his call by acting like Taylor didn't really walk out of the ring under his own power talking the entire time.. or that he didn't still win another title by putting on an excellent performance after. Those things did happen, and he wasn't some broken shell on the ground unable to get up after the fight was stopped.

If I saw the fight for the first time without already knowing the outcome (I read about it in Ring magazine as a kid before I ever got to see it) I'm sure I'd have had Taylor ahead, but in retrospect it's pretty damn obvious that Chavez dealt out a much more serious beating throughout.
Surely it's not strictly about who lands more often?

Taylor was a great boxer, he was winning, though I don't fault the ref, I think he asked Tayler something more than once and Taylor didn't answer If I remember correctly.

I think Taylor looked over at Lou Duva for instruction. I think he nodded at him.
