He was good, not great. Great amateur, but did not have the punch to be great pro. Olympics made him star, and got him right road to title, and best management and training (Duva and Benton) Benton, by the way, was one of greatest trainers of 1970's to 1990's, something overlooked. Chavez destroyed him, he was hospitalized after fight, and was not same after it. Awful beating to body and some hard head shots from Chavez. People who scored for Taylor were scoring amateur style, not pro.
One of the most talented fighters I ever saw, not much in the way of power, had some of the fastest hands anyone's ever seen in his prime, great chin, flashy combination puncher, unfortunately, he liked to brawl, he would rather stand toe-to-toe than take advantage of his great movement and avoid punches. it was his style which, in my opinion led to a short (and tragic) career for him.
 Meldrick is an atg. First man to defeat Julio Ceasar Chavez over 11 and a half rounds Also stopped Buddy Mc fricken Girt in the 12th. He also did well against Terry Norris for a little bit of their fight when Taylor was already shot. Meldrick top 10 atg [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=porsK2f9emo[/ame]
People will say he never fulfilled his potential but that's not true.... Yes he had fast hands and was very very exciting to watch, but as Thread Stealer stated, he was brawl-happy when he didn't need to be and just seemed to find a way to "lose" fights. It's hard to envisage him beating any real top 140/147lber when he just seemed to always make bad in-ring decisions. Very sad to see his speech so poor in the Legendary Nights episode though. Solid wins over McGirt and Davis, but the lack of a signature win tells you something about Taylor.
Taylor was brilliant simple as, i just don't get it that he dose'nt get the respect he's wellover due. He was the best IMO & i've always been a JCC fan & name me anyone else that could have matched Meldrick back then. It took the likes of a J.C.Chavez who somehow snatched an unlikely victory from the jaws of certain defeat to get the better of Meldrick. If that lying scumbag Lou Duva had just said to Meldrick run for the last round then victory was assured. But all prop's to JCC for pulling of what can only be viewed as the nigh on impossible with his "It ai'nt over till the last bell rings" Taylor was great boxer/fighter & a punching BLIZZARD:deal
Why out of all the great welterweights and light-welterweights of the past, you had to compare him to Pacquiao though?
he wanted to come up with a non-black ATG obviously. to think Pac puts him to sleep is fking ******ed btw. took a sustained beating from Chavez for 12 rnds and fking Pac is gonna put him to sleep?
but look at his hands  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=porsK2f9emo&feature=player_detailpage#t=183s
