Melvin Manhoef has retired from MMA competition following his first round submission loss to eventual DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix champion Gegard Mousasi last week. The news comes from a Manhoef spokesman, who tells Fightline that "training seven days a week and three times a day has taken its toll on his family life." No word on whether the 32-year-old Dutch striker will continue competing in K-1, where he was last seen in April being KO'd by Remy Bonjask

Ok im probably a bit late with this news but there goes one of MMA`s biggest secrets..:-(

I would had loved a fight Anderson Silva vs him, at a catchweight, in a fantasy world.
    Just standing, any strike.
    Great fight

Doubtful, everything that Cyborg was able to do to give Manhoef trouble Silva is basically twice as good at, and much bigger reach.

Yes Melvin has done K1, but he has been very hit or miss, fighting in K1 doesn't make you a great kickboxer, it just means you fought in K1.

Don't see any reason for a catch weight either, they both fight at 185 or 205.

sad news.I always thought he was a pioneer. He was one of the few mma artist who would stuff a takedown with fast striking.

    you are sure about that?
I mean, I know UFC and Dana White made a perfect job of hyping Silva like a machine, but I dont know if Melvin already faced such a slick and powerfull striker like Silva who's accuracy is seriously off the chart.
When Silva faced the very good kick boxer, Murray, Silva troubled him with his movement, and leg kick to nullify completly Murray's strike.
Anyway, it would have been a great fight, thats sure

Melvin is a GREAT striker. He`s a also a very good and fast counter puncher who is VERY accurate. Silva is not as dynamic as Melvin but Melvins hands and low kicks are much better in my opinion than Silva`s. Melvin only ever has trouble when he faces guys much bigger and heavier than him. Other than that at his weight the guys a powerhouse.

damn! i had no idea...oh well...family is more important than anything and if he's able to live without fighting (fiancially speaking) then good for him.

Too bad we never saw that guy in the ufc though.

He'll be back. No doubt he;ll need some money at some point and someone will put an offer on the table that he can't refuse. Too bad he's taking a break from MMA - because Manhoef has mad striking skills.
