We haven't been able to attract the very biggest overseas names here very often and when we have they have tended to be south of their primes. But we have been fortunate to have seen some pretty decent s****s here over the years. Here's a thread to discuss some of those home soil s****s.
I'll start things off with what I think was the first world title fight between two Aussies held here, and perhaps the first genuine world title fight between two Aussies anywhere? Correct me if I am wrong. 1985 Barry Michael vs Lester Ellis for the IBF super featherweight title was a war, and not just for the 15 x 3 minute rounds either. The war started well before and ended well after. Michael sweated down a few divisions to get a crack at Lester's title and won the war of words to the point he probably distracted Lester enough to get under his guard. Great fight and made all the more interesting because Michael was Lester's hero growing up. The experience of Michael and his hard head probably made all the difference in the end.
They both went the full 12 and Marceta won both. But I don't know those fights. What can you tell us about them?
It's a long time ago to fully remember the fights, but will never forget Young/Kelly fight. Had spots of blood all over me, after Young suffered cut inside the lip in early stages of the fight & they mostly fought in neutral corner directly above me.
Another great one was Frank "The Tank" Ropis vs Barry Michael during the heat of Ash Wednesday all those years ago. The two hard nuts went hammer & tong for 11 rounds. Frank just kept bulldozing forward and Barry just kept pushing back. Eventually Fammo came in and stopped it in the 11th. Michael the winner. Hell of a fight. One of our best ever local wars that one.
Darren Obah vs Gavin Ryan - Oz title was a great battle, as was Stuart Patterson vs Danny McGrail over 8 - probably the cleanest fight I've ever seen. It was non-stop from Go to O....no hugging...it was all head- body, body-head, head-body affair.
Handy little fighter Suey Patterson. Gave Tony Miller a very tough fight first time around. Not sure what happened in their 2nd meeting? Listed as a technical draw in Boxrec. Any clues on how that one panned out?
time: 3:00 | judge: Gus Mercurio 105-101 | judge: Jim Boland 102-104 | judge: Aneeka Williams 103-103 Australian lightweight title Miller was cut by accidental head-clash (round unknown) & bout was stopped on cut at end of round 11
"Tiger" Tim Bell's war with Joel Casey a few years back was memorable. I don't know how Casey got back in the ring 4 months later. Bell never did got back in the ring. Brutal contest!
Frank Ropis v Barry Michael and Barry Michael v Lester Ellis are the two best fights I have ever seen. ......,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I was in Stewy Patterson's corner the night he fought Tony Miller. Stewy was robbed of that win.
