I don't think of any loss, however bad, as "humiliating." Fighters have weaknesses, or get old or have bad days......we're all fortunate to have jobs where we're not open to this level of scrutiny for simply losing a contest. They try, they succeed or fail, and the world goes round in any event. I'm personally not going to hang that label on someone.

Unless it's New Orleans Duran. He deserved that.

And most boxing fans understand this ....look at Floyd Mayweather, Joe Calzaghe, Andre Ward , and Rocky Marciano....undefeated fighters who get a tremendous amount of criticism

Sonny Liston KO 1 over Floyd Patterson. Either fight. Floyd even wore a disguise to leave the arena in at least one of those.

You do realise that would include the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Julio Cesar Chavez?

Regarding Ali "quitting" against Holmes, Ali was in full promo mode before that fight, telling everyone what he'd do to Holmes. So it had to be somewhat humiliating. Fans forgave him, but I think his very poor performance against Holmes is what drove him to fight Berbick. Like, "I can do better than THAT!"

Did Gomez catch a lot of flack for the loss to Sanchez at the time?

First one that came to mind for me was Fernando Vargas being dismantled by ODLH, although he was competitive on the scorecards.
