What world title winning efforts stand out?

It can be a dominant peformance, a memorable victory by an underdog or the announcement of a major talent on the world stage but it must be a title changing hands.

Roy Jones coming down in weightt to take the title from Tarver. Probably because I watched it recently but Roy did the unthinkable by moving up and beating Ruiz and then cutting down to 175. Tarver claimed the vacant mantle and there was bad blood going in. Roy over came a lot of adversity and it was a pretty fun fight where Roy had to dig in and fight a hard fought effort to take back the title. Maybe not as great aas the other examples and certainly over shadowed by the rematch

Pavlik vs Taylor was another fun one. Really loved the build up in this one and what a marquee match of undefeated middleweights with contrasting styles. Taylor damn near had him out in the second round and maybe anybody not named Smoger waves that fight off. I remember Pavlik with blood around his nose and mouth smiling and laughing a little in his corner as a I'm ok kind of moment. He proceeded to back up and batter Taylor until cornering him and pummeling him to the canvas. Pavlik could really fight, shame what wound up happening to both him and Taylor

Duran-Buchanan. Buchanan was a well-respected champion at the time and Duran was young and pretty unknown. Duran came out like a house afire and never let up and dominated the fight (let's forget the ending) and really announced himself on the world stage:lupie:

Problem is, Duran wouldn't give Buchanan a deserved rematch, considering the "ending".

Ali v Foreman....which was less controversial than Clay- v Liston, (especially if you dig into the background of the characters involved in the Miami fight).

I like the Sanchez-Lopez mention. That really sums this up. Sal came out of nowhere and performed brilliantly. I would also add

Carlos Monzon-Nino Benvenuti - Monzon was such and unknown, Euro papers read: 'Benvenuti loses' rather than 'Monzon wins'

Rodolfo Gonzalez-Chango Carmona - Carmona was regarded as a monster after the beating he gave Mando Ramos. A 3-1 favorite to do the same to Gonzalez, but Rodolfo battered him, winning every round before Chango succumbed on his stool for the 13th round.

Carlos Palomino-John Stracey - to tell you the truth, Palomino really didn't deserve a crack at the title. A win over shopworn Zovek Barajas and a draw with Hedgemon Lewis on his record. If it wasn't for a deal between Aileen Eaton and Mickey Duff. But Carlos grabbed the opportunity and gave Stracey one bad body beating.

    Another welterweight "surprise"....Pipino Cuevas.

Cuevas, just 15-5, and coming off a "loss" to Andy "The Hawk" Price, gets a
shot at 36-7-4 WBA Champion Angel Espada, who was defending the WBA WW title for the 2nd time ( Espada beat Clyde Gray for the vacant WBA title, after the WBA had stripped Jose Napoles of the WBA Champion status)

1976-07-17 : Pipino Cuevas 145¼ lbs beat Angel Espada 146¼ lbs by TKO at 2:37 in round 2 of 15
    • Location: Plaza de Toros Calafia, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico
    • Referee: Larry Rozadilla
    • WBA Welterweight Title
    Comments
    • Espada was knocked down three times in the second round.
    • Cuevas becomes the youngest person to ever win a welterweight championship at 18 years old.
    • Cuevas would go on to defend his title eleven different times, before losing to Thomas Hearns in 1980.

Good post. Roy Jones dug deep that night and brought home the W. He showed grit, heart, and he took some punches and proved he had a chin. It was a rough fight. That was a good win.

This 20 year old kid came out of Cupey Alto Puerto Rico to challenge Maurice Blocker for the IBF Welterweight Crown. Blocker a 6-3 Welterweight with good boxing skills and he was a Vet. Felix Trinidad was like a force of nature that day. Mike Tyson couldn`t have taken apart a man any better than that. He was 20 years old undefeated new Champion and as a fan I was instantly ready to see more of this guy. It was exciting to be a fan then. " When they fall face down they don`t get up Bobby!!!!!!"
