It was an easy pick for Lewis. Been a fan of both since their careers started, but anyone following boxing knew Tyson was way past his best. Hell he was past his best when he fought Holyfield, never mind Lewis. But the way Lewis fought him would have made it tough for any version of Tyson to win. Basically Lewis did something I don't think any other fighter did, which was to manhandle him.
Most people in the UK made a lot of money on Holyfield vs Tyson II - for obvious reasons, Evander was still a 4/1 dog. Lewis wasn't that big a favourite in the UK, most likely due to the Rahman loss not long before.
I didn't watch the fight until much later because I knew it was a mismatch. Anyone will eyes knew the fight was a joke. Tyson had already gotten his ass kicked by Holyfield, twice, several years earlier. And the fight was nothing more than a money-maker for Tyson and a big name for Lewis.
Not trying to knit-pick here, but I'm pretty sure that Buster Douglas manhandled Tyson. By the way, so did Robin Givens.
Robin may have, but Douglas never really did. He basically outboxed him, and beat him to the punch, which is different. But I don't recall Douglass leaning on him and knocking him down with his weight, and getting reprimanded for elbowing or anything along those lines.
I picked Lewis to win in the ninth, so I was pretty close. I admit though that the closer the fight came to starting on the night I was less and less confident and I was aware right up to the end that Tyson was capable of turning around with one big punch. It wasn't a great fight really but the hype and the copious booze made it a real nailbiter on the night.
I knew Tyson was washed up and was a huge Lewis fan, but I still picked Tyson to knock Lewis out early. I must have bought into all the bull**** around Tyson. I should probably stop being influenced by other peoples crappy opinions. Having said that, I do enjoy this forum
You'd be surprised like Rudyard said how many picked Tyson. The massive hype before the fight might have also influenced this. There were plenty of people picking Tyson before the fight, the somewhat recent Rahman loss might have also had something to do with it. That's why I expected more than 2 people to come outo f the closet.
I was really hoping Tyson could pull the win. I think that if Tyson won, then he might had the chance to see Tyson-Holyfield 3, which Tyson could have the chance to redeem himself. And if he hdid, he would be remembered highly. However as early as 2000, I already knew Tyson would have no chance and I based it on how Lewis handled Tua with absolute ease.
I was 100% sure Lewis would beat a well past his prime Tyson, Holyfield vs Tyson 1 however I was miles off!
I was at a party of about 20-30 or so people watching that fight in NY & not one other person in the room picked Lewis to win. I have a hard time believing all of you picked lewis. Regardless, I picked Lewis & by mid to late KO. I won money that night and a fair amount of repect from those "Tyson fans" :yep Truth is I'd pick Lewis over any version of Tyson.
I picked Lewis by TKO in the 7th. In all honesty, I really dont even consider the victory a notable one for LL. Tyson is a name, but he was completely shot at this point. The win doesnt really say anything about Lewis's career in anyway, its not a hallmark victory.
