The fight was scheduled on May 16th, 97. Unfortunately, injuries cancelled the bout an it never got rescheduled. How do you think this fight would've ended in 97th? Mercer coming off battles vs Holyfield, Lewis, Witherspoon. Golota right after two Bowe fights.
Mercer needed surgery after Lewis detached his neck ligaments with uppercuts. He was never the same after that fight.
Shame it never came off. Golata wins but is pushed all the way by Ray. Mercer comes forward constantly but golata is getting the best shots in counter punching. It goes the distance and golata wins by unanimous. But a entertaining fight non the less.
They were both a bit shopworn after their respective bouts. This might have less to do with their natural fighting level than with how well they'd recovered.
Would've been a good fight. I gotta go with Mercer here, if he showed up the way he did against Lewis, Holyfield and Witherspoon, I think he beats Golota. Golota I think would carry the early rounds but eventually get busted up by Mercer and his jab wouldn't surprise me to see Golota take a knee, give up or resort to dirty tactics late in this bout.
I agree with Heizenberg. Golota was more skillful and would start out well, but Ray's chin would discourage him and Mercer would catch up to him later.
