Mercer vs Liston

Chin vs skill and power. I dont see Mercer causing Liston any problems. Liston can win the fight from the outside, ATG jab vs a non existent jab

 

Depends on which Liston shows up. Depending on his mood, he can either effortlessly outbox him or (more likely) KO him late after systematically breaking him down.

 

I think sonny gets a decision but if he's on top form he may stop him late.

 

Actually Mercer developed a pretty useful jab as he matured. That said as long as Liston keeps out of firefights with Mercer he ought to be able to win. Liston's big risk is in wearing himself out or trading with Mercer who imho has a vast chin edge over Liston and would love to get to grips with Sonny and show him who the Dad around here really was.

 

Liston would make a mess of Mercer with his face first style. Liston might even stop the iron-chinned Mercer late.

 

Liston beats him up, badly.

 

Mercer actually had a very good jab, as he has shown against Holyfield and Lewis whom he outjabbed clearly. His jab didn't look good/solid only against Larry Holmes who was just clearly the best jabber and technician among all Ray's opponenents, even at 42.

 

Mercer can actually be a tough opponent for him. I favor Liston, but Mercer had a tough chin and could hit. Liston, if he keeps this a boxing match, can comfortably win a UD. But, if he turns this into a punch out, this can look like Lewis vs Mercer, in which case, Liston can win a SD

 

Liston delivers a systematic out-pointing of Mercer.

Despite developing a solid jab, over a period of time after the Holmes loss, Mercer remained a bit of a face-first slugger, which would have suited Liston to a T.

Mercer, at his best, was a major competitor though and he'd be hard to stop, so I think it unlikely that Liston would manage to bring proceedings to an early close.

 

Mercer destroys Liston, different leagues.

 

If there was a destruction, I think it would be the other way around

 

Only chance for Mercer would be Liston being dumb enough to go for a brawl, in which case *maybe* Mercer prevails.

Otherwise it is another honest day of work for Liston. UD.

 

A big part of the reason his jab didn't look good against Holmes was he hadn't really developed it. He said himself he learnt a lot about the jab that night. So he claimed anyway. The other fights were years later. He said Holyfield was the best technician he facedand was most complimentary. He said Holmes had the best jab.

 

Bloody fight. Mercer’s face would look like Wepners. Liston UD if it takes place in Liston’s era. In Mercer’s era referee stops fight. Referees in Liston’s era didn’t usually stop a fight for something as trivial as a boxer bleeding to death.
