Mercer lost his first big MMA fight by being taken down in seconds and then being submitted against Kimbo two years ago. As is often the cause with Mercer, he came to collect a paycheck.

He actually came into this fight in shape. Mercer is nearly fifty years older. Older then Evander Holyfield. He knocked out Sylvia in 9 seconds.

Sylvia was one of the best heavyweights in the UFC for about 6 years, the heavyweight champion on top of that. Not one of the best MMA heavyweights of all time but he has a damned solid resume and was top dog in his division.

Tim was 24-5 coming into the fight, is 6'8 and was 311 pounds on fight night.

Mercer's pre-fight statement.

“Everything was against me,” said Mercer, who called out Eric “Butterbean” Esch after the emotional victory. “I whooped that ass.”

:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

Not very impressed by MMA, regardless of how " rough " it's supporters claim..

shuffling in and out, lifting their knees like they're ready to pee. Doing all those fast little short-distanced elbows and pitter patter punches.... Over rated sport and over appraised toughness.......MMA fighters lack upper body skill in my opinion....

In fairness to MMA, Sylvia was not one of the top dogs in the division and had not been for some time. He's lost quite a few of his last big fights. But still, it was damn impressive how Mercer flattened him! Some of the MMA guys are a little too cocky and arrogant for my taste.

I wish there was a better angle on the KO punch.

From the guy's body language, it appeared to be vicious. Wish we had a closer view from a better angle to see the impact.

I hear that alot of the folks that run MMA were shocked that Mercer KO'd Sylvia in that fashion....

......I dont understand the shock. Real boxers like Mercer will always get taken down and submitted by an MMA fighter exellently versed in takedowns and the art of submission.....

Sylvia from what I've seen of him is a standup MMA fighter who likes to stay up and throw punches.
Sylvia is an MMA puncher is what I'm getting at......tailor made for a boxer turned MMA fighter like Mercer.

......so why are the MMA folks shocked that Mercer a proffesional standup boxer KTFO of Sylvia?????

You would think that a proffesional boxer even one as old as Mercer, would take out most of these MMA fighters that fight standup......fighters like Chuck Liddel even in his prime would be taken out against even a way past prime proffesional fighter the quality of Ray Mercer.

The shock was more down to Tim being as dumb as he is. Even if he is a stand up fighter in mma everyone expected him to take Mercer down even Kimbo wasn't dumb enough to think he could stand with Ray. Mercer has no ground game at all and Tim has been training grappling for years mostly he uses it as defence from more skilled opponent but still has enough knowledge their to submit Mercer. However never underestimate the stupidity of Sylvia who actually believed he could handle Mercer standing.

This comment makes you seem uneducated to the sport especially how talented some of the fighters are especially the ground fighters. The lifting of the knee is a muay thai thing to defend against a possible kick. There hands are never gonna be on par with a boxers as its only part of their

wrestling since they were like 8.

The grapplers are some of the best in the world and of the very highest level the stand up guys for the most part are not. You might get some quality kickboxers like Cro Cop but most top muay thai guys stick to their own sport. In terms of "roughness" the likely hood of serious of fatal injury is less then boxing. The elbows in the clinch again are a muay thai technique although wrestlers often use them due to their superior clinch control. Just like any sport you got some very tough guys like Nog (countless number of comebacks) and Nakai (fought blind against men over 100lbs bigger then him) and some not as tough.

Either way it takes a lot to reach the top and Sylvia was merely the Valuev of mma who had gone far due to his size and in the beginning (while he was winning) poor competition and not based on his skill.
