I dont understand this mentality at all, they are 2 different sports, why do dumbass boxing/MMA fans insist on comparing the 2 ? A lack of knowledge & sheer ignorance is the answer.
Lovely right hand, but the very thought of a 50 year old Mercer and Butterbean in the same ring (sorry, octagon) makes me cringe.
Exactly. I wasnt at all suprised by the KO, its obvious that any pro boxer will KO even the best punchers in MMA if the MMA fighter tries to stand with him, the REAL embarassment isnt how Mercer KOd Silvia, its how the boxing fans that dont like MMA are celebrating this like they`ve just won the lottery :verysad... THATS the embarassment, it shows how worried & insecure these guys are about their own sport IMO. Both sports take a lot of skill & hard work if you want to be the best & neither could be dominant in the others field for any period of time... only a dumb ******* doesnt know this. Botswana :smoke
Yep...... .....an MMA fighter would'nt crack the top 50 in his division as a boxer......in fact, they'd likely get brutalized by the average journeyman boxer..... .....and vice versa a boxer fighting MMA! I'm not so much an MMA fan, but I will tune in more out of curiousity, I just like boxing so much more..... ....in any regards, its plain to see that boxers are just that, boxers......on the average, in a street fight a quality fighter is not going to beat a quality MMA fighter. Out in the real world, a boxer would be obliterated by an MMA standout, its just that simple......I dont know why fans fickle about which sport is better or truer......to each his own, I happen to love the science of two men in a boxing ring trying to out do the other with their fist!
Not so sure about the "real world" scenario mentioned above. A pair of fast hard hands is a valuable tool in the street, especially against a couple of opponents. While you're submitting one guy on the ground his buddy is taking a shank to your back or a bat to your head. Better to flatten one of them fast and give the other guy a second to think it over to change his mind. In the street there are no rules. Anything goes.
Anyone in MMA who chooses to stand and exchange with Mercer is just asking for a loss. If you've got the ground game, take him down. If not, avoid him.
For a boxer there is always a puncher's chance against a grappler, especially if he is cocky and stupid enough to stand up and trade. I remember Mercer losing twice in K1. The quality of some of these fighters really impressed me. To my mind, only boxing's elite punchers would be able to make a serious dents in that sport.
Obviously it all comes down to whether the striker (the 'former boxer' or upright fighter) can land enough prior to being taken down. That issue can be decided quickly, as the ground guy doesn't want to stand toe-to-toe any longer than he has to, and when he makes his move, if the puncher can't hurt him reasonably significantly, it's going to end in tears on the ground. For mine boxing is a much better spectacle than all of the following: 1/ Kick boxing: Messy by comparison and not as well regulated a sport (everyone seems to be a former 7 time world champion - mind you boxing is getting nearly as bad). Kicking people in the legs repeatly just isn't that flash to watch. 2/ Mua Thai: Messier again than kickboxing. Clinches can take too long to resolve and generally make for stop-start action. On the positive side the elbow & knee KO's can be spectacular. Plus it has a rich history in it's homeland. 3/ MMA: Often hard to see the action, particularly when it goes to ground. Can reach stalemates, again particularly on the ground. Unlikely to ever achieve mainstream acceptance in many parts of the world due to the preceived extreme violence. On the positive side the early MMA bouts resolved a lot of the 'which style is better' arguments between karate, boxing, kung fu, wrestling etc. Nowadays most seem to be hybrid fighters, but the 'striker' vs 'ground fighter' contrast still makes for an interesting match-up occassionally.
I think he meant in a square go, a 1 on 1 anything goes street fight... the MMA guy will generally do better than a boxer.
And in a real situation K-1 style doesnt strictly work either, you just need to grab the kicking leg and dump them on their ass, breaking their hip! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy0AZjpGGz8
MMA. I don't care to see a man get kneed in the face. It's more about aggression than science, as skilled as its practitioners might be. MMA is promoted towards boxing fans with Attention Deficit Disorder. --magoo, I'm with you on this one.
