Pavlik got up to 190 before training. If he gets in the gym right away, weight shouldn't be as big of an issue. I think 168 is rough for him, but I think he makes good money and good fights there.

Pavlick at 168 would be a good name to put on bute's resume while he waits for the ss to finish

    Weight is not an issue?

Pavlik reportedly weighed 12 pounds over the MW limit just one day prior to the weigh-in. Did he usually weigh that much in his previous fights?

Seems to me he's really struggling to make 160 right now and even if he makes it, he can't be remotely as effective as he was before. Only option seems to be 168, where he will probably have a really hard time with so many top guys @ that weight.

Pavliks advantages at 160 will now be nullified at 168. Thats messed up but who knows maybe the double jab can win him some fights. Rematch Miranda at SMW or something.

175 might be the way to go for Pavlik. Other than Chad Dawson, I'd favor him over the rest of the fighters in that weight class. Besides, that appears to be the more natural weight class for Kelly's body. He looks like he could be more successful version of Clinton Woods.

As for him leaving 160, I think he could definitely beat Martinez in a rematch. Between the cutts and him gassing out, those could both be addressed so they wouldn't be as much a factor in the rematch. Give up drinking, move out Youngstown, and hire a real cutt man.

I can see him causing trouble at 168 or 175. But not the way he's been living. He's a big guy, and never been ripped. But he just looked a bit softer against Martinez. If he's gonna go up he needs to start some sort of strength training to get ready for these big guys. He looked sluggish in his last few fights in both hands and feet. At one time Pav could move good, throw beautiful combos, and cutoff the ring beautifully. Obviously his weight and draining has affected this. But if he could get back to pre Taylor or Taylor1 I could see a force in either weight..

Pavlik should jump straight to 175. He cant beat anyone at 168 in my opinion

I wouldn't favour him vs Erdei, Pascal and especially Cloud. I also think he could be competitive there though, but only if he got serious and commited himself in training.

I would definitely give him a good chance to beat Martinez in a rematch too, sadly it seems that the rematch can't be made @ 160 because of Pavlik's weight issues.

And may I add hiring a new trainer too.

He does have a chance.. And with everyone tied up I'm sure he could get a crack at Bute pretty quickly... And thats a big name and a big check, big risk but huge reward....

However, Merchant was out of line. Pavlik's decision is not official.

He can suceed at 168 with the best buzy. He can avoid Bute as well. Since he had the WBO middle he could get ranked at 168 by the WBO. He can beat Stieglitz. Then with the division still tied up beat Miranda in a rematch, that could get billed very well after that first fight. Then guys like Bika or Manfredo, or any other one dimensional guys he can pound on. Pavliks weakness is movers. None of those guys are movers. He needs to avoid Bute Ward and Dirrel. He has a chance vs Froch, Kessler, Green and Abraham.

At 175 he won't beat Hopkins or Dawson. He may be able to beat Glen Johnson Yusaf Mack and Chris Henry. Pascal beats him. Cloud is on a big llayoff and is very green, I think Pavlik can win that fight.

I don't think he presented it as an official decision. It was more like some information and a personal estimation, which I think is spot-on. At least it should be, if Pavlik has such a hard time making 160, he has no business fighting there anymore. No point in killing himself to make weight, without even being nearly as effective as before.
