I found very interesting this article about who can fill DLHs shoes on being the new Golden Boy.

Merchant mentioned Arreola as a potential star but a newsman, Springer mentioned not only should one attract the latinos and the mainstream audience but there needs to be a fighter that can attract the female fans like DLH.

Merchant said: “Ortiz appeals to female fans and he appears to have the kind of talent that can make him a star, but he has to deliver in the ring and keep doing it.”

What do you guys think? How important is the female fan?

Ortiz has a very exciting style, a great story , a great smile and seems well dictated and likable .... if anyone can take DLH's spot it would be Victor Ortiz .... he just need to keep giving us great fights and keep charming new fans!

Is Victor Ortiz with Goldenboy Promotions?

i've heard this reference quite a few times and based on his skill, i would say he can definitely be as badass of a fighter as odlh was. as for the sex appeal thing, i'm not really sure how much the female fans will really play into this one. oscar was a pretty boy. he was also a singer, model, etc... ortiz is just a tough, young, hungry fighter. i don't exactly see him crossing over into the realm de la hoya did.

I like Ortiz but he's no De la Hoya. Most casuals have no idea who the guy is where as Oscar was well known the day he turned pro because of his success in the Olympics; which by the way was during a time period where boxing was more appreciated in general. I'm sure he'll become extremely huge amongst fight fans and will have a tremendous following in his home state of California but that hardly constitutes as "crossover stardom."

Not many, but a lot more boyfriends and husbands would be allowed to order PPV if someone that they want to see is on it as well.

"...and no promoter understands what fighters go through like he [Oscar] does.”

I'm not sure that a guy that was making 5,6-figures a fight when he first turned pro really knows what other fighters go through. Not to mention never having to worry about finding opponents since everyone wanted the payday against you.

That article has some goofy statements in it, but I think that one's the goofiest.

Merchant needs to move away from the Aerreola bandwagon. His desperation for a successful action-fighting American HW is obscuring his vision on the guy's talent and, to this point, his accomplishments. Isn't Larry supposed to be the "keep it real/believe it when I see it" guy?

true. merchant seems to really like the guy and has faith on him to revive american heavyweight domination. But i dont think Arreola is the guy.
