So many have been rushed (AJ Banal, Marvin Sonsona, Ciso Morales, Bernabe Concepcion) or just didn't have it (Rey Bautista). What about this kid? According to the article below, he's only 23. http://www.maxboxing.com/news/promo-lead/mercito-gesta-brings-no-mercy-to-san-francisco VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ihvivl_aVR0
I think it's bec of the lack of good trainers. MOst rely on power, chin and heart to win. Donaire learned differently in the amateurs (U.S.) so he got to where he is with skill.
Drian Francisco could be succesfull...He's 20-0-1 with 16KO and is The Interim WBA World Super Flyweight champion...He already holds good stoppage wins over Roberto Vasquez (27-3 20KO) and Duangpetch Kokietgym (52-1-1 21KO)...Negative side he's already 28...
Why does it always have to be, "The next Filipino star", as opposed to "The next Asian star"? I get the fact that Pinoys are proud of their brethren and that's a good thing but I see very little support for other Asians when in fact Japan and Thailand have a lot of good boxers. I see a lot more hype threads for Filipino prospects than an established fighter like P. Wonjongkam. Kind of a shame especially when a vast majority of the Asian community fully support Pacquiao. Gesta looks strong and promising but the same can be said about Masao Nakamura, a guy who's also 23 and has a much higher KO percentage.
The same reasons Mexican don't say the next North American or Latin star, or British say the next European star, etc.etc. Also, the problem with Japan and some other countries is they are protected. Many Japanese are unwilling leave the region. Also, there is a historical animosity in the SE Asia region between China, Koreans, Japanese, Philippines, Vietnam, Thai, etc. So regional pride is quite smaller compared to others. On topic -- Gesta is still very early in his development. I hope at least another 1-2 years of slow competitive matches.
