Merqui was a tough guy but to imply Jones somehow sabotaged his entire career is kind of a joke. Merqui was a slow plodding brawler, Jones was always going to eat him up with his speed. He caught many of guys like this early, and while the ref could have probably given him a standing 8 Jones was still pasting him and he wasnt answering back. Sosa should have also known when to warm up, thats his teams fault for not monitoring the action outside the dressing room but it is amazing how some fights change a fighters entire career and mindset towards boxing. Sometimes they believe so much they are going to win a fight, and when they dont, it mentally crushes them.
Losers make excuses. I was in Bay St. Louis, Miss., when Oscar de la Hoya had to re-glove because he didn't wait for the commish to sign off on his hand wraps (I can honestly say I told his camp what was going to happen and they said f*** the Mississippi Commission, then the inspector walked in and said take 'em off). He managed to overcome. Merqui won his next six fights, got himself back into the title picture, adding the NABF title, then lost to Kenny Bowman and Ray Berry. What's his excuse for those losses?
Great brawler though in his day. The beatings he dealt out to Charles Williams were probably the highlight of his career. Wasn't much of a boxer and never threw a straight punch, but he could take it and keep up the pressure. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4RGYdGUu-s[/ame]
I believe he stood a real chance at stopping Jones because Jones was very close to punching himself out . Not sure if that would have happened under legit referee , but it did seem so to me .
Jesus Christ.atsch The fight might've been stopped a tad early but Jones was beating the **** out of Sosa and Sosa who'd already been dropped and rocked numerous times in the fights brief duration stood absolutely no chance of winning or even lasting the distance. He should thank the ref for stopping it when he did because the so called controversy allowed him to save a little face and retain a bit of dignity as Jones was absolutely embarassing him. Look for Jones haters to use this bull**** non event against him though.
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting film/interview. Of course, I'm not buying all Sosa's excuses, BUT the Jones fight did look like a premature stioppage. There was an uproar. For a fighter like Sosa, a big puncher who was known to rally back from being hurt and on the ropes, such a stoppage might be crucial. Unless of course Jones has a granite chin and would have been impervious to Sosa's counter-attacks. The stoppage was a few good punches premature, IMO.
It wasn't really a premature stoppage, he'd been knocked down and was on shaky legs, he tookabout 10-12 punches without punching back, his neck snapped back about 3 times, and when he proested it he was nearly going down, he was seconds away from going down for good and the refs job is to look after the fighters. It's not easy being a ref
I think it was premature, and so did a vast number of people close to the action. Sure, it's not easy being a ref. Sometimes they get it wrong. Sosa lived to fight another day, but he got the short end of the deal on that day.
It's one thing rallying back against a past prime Prince Charles Williams but his chances of rallying against an absolute peak Jones is a completely different thing. I actually think this is an underrated performance by Jones. Sosa was rated the best chin in boxing at the time and in his first foray at 175 Roy floored and battered him showing rare speed, accuracy and power. This fight is a good example of what made Roy special. I can understand why Sosa is bitter at the premature stoppage given his history but he was well and truly out of his depth here imo and was lucky to avoid a prolonged beating.
Just remember that Griffin "lost" their rematch for the same reason : Jones' management / promoters made sure Griffin (and Sosa and who knows how many more) would not enter the ring ready for the fight. Jones was also supposed to fight Jorge Vaca @ 154 for an obvious reason , but since he couldn't make the weight , he weighed in @ 156 and Vaca still fought him despite he said he won't fight him above 154 , the outcome is well known. James Toney was drained for Jones and Reggie Johnson was both past it and above his optimal weight for that time which was 168 . Jones looked good against Sosa because Sosa was not allowed time to get himself warmed , Sosa was used to get hit in his fights and the ref showed who was his sponsor when he chose to ignore the rules and not give Merqui a standing 8 count . I don't hate Jones , just repeating the truth. I do hate his promoters and management whomever they are because of the above , but not Jones . So many fights' outcomes must be reviewed in order to know who the true greats of the sport were . Jones might have been able to stop Sosa anyway , but same is the for Sosa stopping Jones. Jones would have had to keep that pace and avoid being hit if the fight was allowed to continue , and Sosa should have been given his gloves and the time to warm , if all of these were to happen , the fight would have a different look and of course meaning and legitimacy .
James Toney as champion (if he was as weight drained as claimed) has only himself to blame for being a greedy, undisciplined arsehole, not Jones or his camp. Reggie Johnson was the IBF Light Heavyweight champion when Jones met and trounced him, and was meeting in a unification match so I don't know what you're talking about with that. Sosa had zero chance of beating Jones whether you believe his lack of a warm up or not. He was always slow, unskilled and wide open which against a prime Jones meant the fight could only pan out as it ultimately did. This is a non issue and why Sosa's bitching a decade and a half later is given any legs speaks volumes about the mind sets some posters have in regards to Jones.
If you think this is premature you must think an awful lots of TKOs are premature. When a fighters neck is jolted back 3 times, after he was on wobbly legs from a KD its a bad sign and the fighter is in serious danger. Even after the KD Sosa was about as wobbly as Lewis was after the McCall KD. I actually counted 23 unanswered punches (not all landed) and he was nearly going down when the ref stepped in. If the ropes weren't there he would have gone down after the ref stopped it and he was falling all over the ring. If he had punched after the KD in between those 23 punches, or held or done something than take punishment it could be premature. As it is 1 more shot to the chin and he would have been out Actually if you watch the round Jones takes some of Sosa's best punches
