Merqui Sosa was one of the best fighters never to have won a portion of a world championship, he lost to Roy Jones and Thomas Tate and Mike Nunn in high profile fights yet his loss to James Toney was by split decision , he beat Charles Williams, Glen Johnson, glen Thomas, Sanderline Williams, Jose Quinones to name only a few.. He was very exciting to watch and is one of the nicer men in boxing one could wish to meet.. A class act.. What do y'all think of Merqui, he really was a solid Super middle / light heavy..
Toney said Sosa hit him harder than anyone else, which is saying alot considering all the great fighters Toney fought.
I just spent 2 weeks with Merqui in Las Vegas, he gave me his whole life story and is one of the finest fighting gentlemen that i have ever encountered.. He is a joker and very top class trainer with great work ethics.. He is as honest as anyone i ever met yet still wishes to fight , he is desperate to show that he has something left...
I've only seen Sosa fight on the Jones KO video but of all the guys he knocked out, he looked the most game. He just had his senses scrambled but still wanted to fight.
My friend Fabian Garcia said that this was the one guy that really had him fcked up. I'm talking months after. My coach said Fabian had knots all over his head after fighting Sosa. He had pretty sinister presence in the ring.
Darnell , i am very sure there are a lot of cats out there with some very servere knots inside ind outside thier head after going dukes with you my friend.. I will let Sosa know what you said about Fabian.. God bless..
I was talking about him to a friend a few months ago, yeah he was great, just at the time it was full of great fighters then
Great? LOL:good He was severly hyped by the American magazines going into the Jones fight; why? I will never know... Yes, he had a good chin, he was fun to watch and he beat a couple of veterans, but when it came to career defining fights he blew it. He was a fair solid fringe contender, who if you beat, you knew you were a good fighter.
Beating Glen Johnson amongst others (who went on to own a portion of the championship and beat RJJ) and mix it up competetively is why a lot of us regard him as a greatest boxer never to win a championship belt.. He wasn't really overhyped, he actually was regarded as a sleeping monster who boxed whoever they shoved in front of him and always gave his best. Whether the magazines deemed to rate him high or not , he was a public favorite who had to be saved from himself in hard fights.. (The charles Williams draw was called a draw because the referee had seen enough of the gruelling battle to save both fighters for another day.) Merqui was a good fighter in amongst a division of some greats... God bless.
Yes he was a solid test to anyone, a good fighter; mind you that Williams fight was strange; technically I guess it was a double TKO.... I doubt there have been many of them.
