Like the previous poster wrote, he was raised in Mexico. But even still, you'd be amazed how many people were born and raised in the US and don't speak english. It happens a lot, mainly because there are so many pockets of cities where the entire neighborhood speaks a foreign language. Nothing in the neighborhood is in English - not even the store signs. Unfortunately, even many of the schools are also taught in the neighborhood's language. If you're born there and grow up there, you may very well not learn more than a couple of phrases in english despite being fully American and having never left America.

As an interesting side-effect of this, often because these neighborhoods are several generations old, the language begins to evolve into a patois. If they ever visit their country of ancestral origin, many times they actually struggle to speak their native language because it's so different. Their version of their language will sound antiquated or strange by comparison.

As a result, they never develop fluency in any language outside of their neighborhood, which forces them to stay there.

Do do like half the people we call Mexicans. Margo and Vazquez have lived in Cali for long stretches. You don't need to speak English to live in certain parts of Cali though.

I know Canelo's been learning English. A lot of the guys speak some English though, just aren't too comfortable with it.

I've seen it personally, having lived in NYC and Chicago so I know what I'm talking about.

He wasn't only referring to Spanish speaking communities. NYC Italian/Sicilian communties, German/Polish/Czech communties in Chicago, Chinese/Japanese/Korean communities on the WestCoast, Cuban communities on Florida...list goes on and on.

Exactly. I'd also add the little Korea and Flushing Chinatown populations in NYC, certain areas east of Broadway in the Washington Heights neighborhoods of NYC, LOTS of areas in Humboldt Park Chicago, and even growing pockets of Russian neighborhoods in south Brooklyn where a patois has developed that ruins fluency in either Russian or English.

Spanglish itself is often the result of not having full fluency in either spanish or english. So they combine the two, but have DOCUMENTED difficulty doing well on literacy tests in either language.

Don't get me wrong. This isn't some veiled Republican rail against immigration or whatever or some attempt at pushing an agenda. This is happening with Americans born to Americans in American neighborhoods. It's an interesting effect, that's all.
