Nice little highlights video that popped up in my YouTube feed showing highlights of Mexico v Mexico fights through the years. Nothing revelatory here but a good overview and worth watching all these individually if you missed any. This content is protected
Fights/fight series highlights included: Carlos Zarate-Alfonso Zamora Julio Cesar Chavez-Mario Martinez Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales Erik Morales-Guty Espadas Israel Vasquez-Johnny Gonzalez Juan Manuel Marquez-Marco Antonio Barrera Israel Vasquez-Rafael Marquez Francisco Vargas-Orlando Salido Juan Francisco Estrada-Carlos Cuadras
I was thinking the other day of my favorite Mexico vs. Mexico fights. I wish there was more footage available of Herrera-Martinez II because that looked incredible and reports say people felt it was the best fight they’ve seen. I really like Medel-Pimentel too. That sort of flies under the radar. Zárate-Zamora I still maintain is the biggest all Mexico fight ever. You had two powerhouses, unbeaten, prime, fascinating backstory, and while never was Olivares in popularity, they were plenty popular and the winner stood to be numero uno. It delivered. The Mexican Hagler-Hearns. Barrera-Morales I & III were classics. I don’t know what happened with II. Barrera fought with no passion. Vazquez-Marquez series, from the first fight to the third, it got better each time. Vazquez also had a great series with Oscar Larios, which included a wicked one round battle to open up the series. Vazquez-Gonzalez another gem. Man, is Vazquez not the modern day Danny Lopez or Bobby Chacon? Pure entertainment. Marquez-Barrera was worth the wait. What a battle that was. Olivares-Castillo I & II were thoroughly good too. They packed The Forum with their fights. Castillo could take Rubens best, but couldn’t match his skill. He did make Ruben think more than he was accustomed to though. Mexico vs. Mexican/American has produced gems too. Chacon-Limon IV might be the best fight ever and Zamora-Sandoval is one of the greatest fights ever seen at The Olympic.
Great post, Chris. I completely agree about the fights you’ve mentioned - they’re all great. Herrera-Martinez 2 is such a mouthwatering fight from the six minutes of highlights that exist. Surely the whole thing was filmed and exists somewhere?! Another good one is Herrera-Castillo 2. Not an out-and-out war like some of those you’ve mentioned but a high quality technical battle that could have gone either way. I’d mention the Herrera-Olivares fights as well but the first was a pretty flat performance from Ruben and the second was close and could have gone to Olivares but neither fight set the pulse racing. Yes, good point about Mexican v Mexican-American battles. And there’s the all Mexican-American fights too (Lopez-Chacon immediately springs to mind).
Medel-Pimental was simply a great fight. Pimental dropped Medel early till Medel slowly take control and punished him in the later rounds. Garza-Meza is often spoken as one of the most action packed fight in only 1 round. Zamora-Sandoval was brutal. Just insane back and forth till eventually Zamora won by TKO
How so? I mean… good fight… very good fight, in fact. But ‘best ever’? I’m not sure it would crack my top 10.
Mexican War of Independence Mexico-Comanche Conflicts Mexican-American War Yaqui Wars Texan Revolution Napoleon III's intervention in Mexico Mexican Civil War Pershing Expedition World War II
For action no but for the technical skills on display ? it's definitely up there. That fight is what you call a throwback just so much skill involved.
Oh yeah, it’s a top fight from a skill point of view no doubt but not quite as action packed as some of the other Mexican classics. It’s a really good fight though.
In terms of pure skill I always preferred the American and Cuban style of Boxing. But the Mexicans are the toughest. Their hearts are gigantic. You have to nail them down to beat them. Good video Jel. Gracias.
The best Mexican wars are fights nobody remembers...those nights at the Olympic Auditorium where guys went toe to toe for however long the fight lasted, and then made an extra few hundred picking up all the quarters thrown into the ring. Jimmy Lennon Sr saw a lot of those fights; it was said that his bald head was covered with scars from being hit with coins thrown into the ring to celebrate a good fight.
I think I have likely shared this fight awhile ago but this is a hell of a fight This content is protected
