What's the Classic forums thoughts on this warrior from Manchester? Michael Brodie was a tough fighter that always seems to put on a show and gets involved in some good scraps. His fights with Neil Swain and In Jin Chi are especially great battles. This content is protected This content is protected
World class but fell short of the upmost elite fighters around his era he simply was not quite on that level but a very exciting fighter overall and was unlucky not to win a title vs Jorrin. Medina vs Brodie would've been a hell of a scrap.
He was quality fighter - alwasy in tip-top shape, solid all-around, good body puncher - better than many boxers who won titles around his weight-class when He was competing. Even Medjkoune picked up a belt couple years after Brodie handled him in style... I know there were some controversies about results in Jorrin and first In-Jin Chi fights, but to me it was always more of a local British bias. Two close fights, but Brodie came up just short. Out of his lesser known fights, I really liked the one against Argentinian Pastor Maurin.
I thought Brodie did enough to beat Jorrin. Very unlucky for him to not win the title. There should have at least been a rematch. Brodie against Manuel Medina would have been fun no doubt. I think it would have been great to have seen him challenge Nestor Garza for his SBW title in the 90s. That would have been an all out war.
A shame we didn't get to see Brodie against the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Israel Vazquez, Oscar Larios, Kennedy McKinney or Nestor Garza while while they were all active at Super Bantamweight. He most likely loses to most of them but he would have certainly made those fights very exciting to watch.
I'd have liked to see him fight a Japanese warrior from that time, Naoto Takahashi. Would've been world war 3, but for understandable reasons, it never happened.
Me and my friends were ringside for his rematch with In Jin Chi, and were gutted for him. He was an absolute warrior in so many of his fights. I remember that we paid £110 for our seats for the Chi fight in 2004 which compared to todays prices is cheap.
I used to watch a lot of his fights back in the day. Very exciting fighter who always seemed to just fall that bit short at the elite level. I'm glad you brought him up as he doesn't get his dues often enough - he did a lot for British boxing at the time.
