Can some of the more knowledgeable posters in the Classic Forum tell me a bit about the fighter Michael Carbajal. I just watched his first fight with Humberto Gonzalez, what a fight. I think he was undefeated at the time, and he showed a lot of heart to comeback from those two knockdowns to win by knockout. I'm contemplating buying his career DVD.
Should have been Olympic champ...very good pro fighter....briefly was the top of Lt. Flyweights.....heavy hands. Trained in his backyard. very marketable.
One of the best light flyweights in history. Good technical skills, punishing power, and above all else, a champion. He retired on top beating a young up-and-comer by the name of Jorge Arce.
Particularly impressive when you consider he'd been licked by 'Baby' Jake Matlala in a previous title fight. A fine way to end a career.
Carbajal had a brief peak of about 3 or 4 fights where he was a very highly regarded fighter, even in the top P4P at one point. However, he had poor footwork, leaky defense, and a tendency to cut, and those weaknesses soon caught up with him. But there was no question about his heart, toughness, and two-fisted punching power. And as said, he scored one of the best closing acts of any career when he upset Arce in his final fight.
There can be an argument that the Arce fight suffered from an early stoppage, but Carbajal was still great in that fight.
