The dokes of 89 went 10 hard rounds with holyfield when the real deal was starting out as heavy. The ruddock ko was I believe 90 or 91.
The truth of the matter is that Dokes was not a good fighter. He was a fun fighter, but not a good one. His one good win was BS and negated by a rematch where he retained Weavers rightful title with a BS draw. He couldnt convincly get past Cobb of all fighters. He was KOed by Evander and Coetzee in fun fights. And in early 90, Ruddock KOed a fat version out of the ratings for good, though Bowe brought him back for an easy KO. I think he beats the sub top 10 guys on Wlads list and if he has King he might get some controversial wins. But i think Povetkin, Chageav, Byrd, Haye, Sultan, McCline, Sanders, Peter, Chambers...should all beat him in fun hard fights.
I hate to agree with you because Dokes was a good fighter to watch, but he was not top tier in action. I just don't think he hit hard enough and didn't have the size to hang with the best. I'll say this though, if he had a good night, the other guy better be on form or he could well lose.
That's the thing though. A guy that struggled with Cobb and Weaver, and got knocked out by Coetzee shouldn't have gave Evander a hard time. I think a combination of things. Evander didn't have easy fights lol That's just his nature, for all the acclaim he gets as a tech guy he was a brawler, a technically sound brawler. And when you mix it up, you mix it up lol It's not going to be easy, but that's how Evander won fights. So I think Evander's style and Dokes' style produced that.
The early 80s dokes was a lightning fast puncher.tgst world titlist was v good. The 1989 version was shot and fat but ko magazine hyped him
