Marciano is a greater fighter than Coetzee,Mercer.Dokes,Thomas, etc that doesn't necessarily mean he beats them imo.

I wasn't aware that fans of Rocky were sycophantic, though I guess they have a lot to brag about considering his indubitably terrific, unbeaten record. I love Larry Holmes, but even he couldn't beat it (though I see Larry as a definite step up overall as ATG).

Dokes would have looked all flashy and good in the first two rounds. After that, we all know Michael's problems with stamina. He was almost a cocaine fighter: on top of the world for about ten minutes thennnnnnnnnnn:

    NOSEDIVE!

I don't care about detractors, Rocky had a great right hand, and he knew how to throw it straight. Dokes would have been pole-axed imo, out cold.

    exactly.

Dokes dropped those hands as the rounds went by. Always. And after like 1980, he became flatfooted instead of gliding around the ring. He definately needs big time footwork and mobility against this opponent but he had come off those toes by the Gardner fight even.

I disagree. Big Don has too much class for Gardner.

I wouldn’t go that far. Dokes was nearly, or about as good as Don Cokkell. No better.

It kind of does though, I cannot see those guys beating any of the best guys Rocky fought at world level. Old Louis included.

That's real easy to agree with. Though I have a soft spot for the old-time-brawler style of Mercer, he probably wouldn't do much better than Coetzee, etc. At least prime Mercer could take a really good shot. But Ezzard Charles, JJW...as you mentioned, old man Joe....

naaaah. Charles alone probably would have made those guys look lame.

Another thread with some fool comparing a modern sized modern skilled heavyweight to a 180 pound unskilled cruiser weight from the 50's. Michael Dokes would beat the **** out of Marciano.

Marciano by KO. Dokes looked great in some of his one round KOs. Take him beyond the first couple rounds, he would look more and more average. Remember how much he got hit by Tex Cobb? It was crazy. Not a good sign when considering a Marciano fight.

    I'll settle this thread

I gave this the old eye test. Watched film of Dokes and Marciano. Marciano is unquestionably better. Watch the film.

You really need to stay off the drugs. Or if you are going to keep using blow then give me some so I can be wacked out of my mind like you are. Why would you assume Rocky Marciano a 180 pound cruiser weight could beat Dokes a 6'3 220 pound modern sized and modern skilled heavyweight? Why do guys like insist on believing guys like Rocky Marciano, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey ect could beat modern sized heavyweights. That is a rhetorical question because clearly you only believe Marciano ect could beat modern heavyweights because a clearly obvious reason.

You do understand there are weight classes for a reason right? Or is that beyond your grasp too? You do realize there hasn't been a "heavyweight" champion Marciano size since the 1950's when Marciano himself was champ right? You dudes crack me up with your nobody could handle Marciano's punching power routine. Tell that to Ted Lowry a 160 pound guy who took Marciano the distance twice without being hurt. Even if you want to believe Marciano was the hardest punching 180 pound guy in history. Why do you assume that equates to him being able to knock out a modern sized heavyweight?

Dokes lost to Gerrie Coetzee who was 6'3 1/2 215, Undefeated 20-0 Evander Holyfield, 6'3 230 pound 22-1 Razor Ruddock, 6'4 240 pound 32-0 Riddick Bowe and two fights when he was past his prime. Dokes never lost to a 5'10 180 pound tomato can like Rocky Marciano in his career. On that same note Rocky Marciano never fought or beat anybody Dokes size.

This is how I see it. Though I do see Rocky beating those guys...don't get mad anyone but especially Dokes.

Does was a dubious flash in the pan at best.

If Mike Weaver hadn't been robbed twice he would have knocked out Coetzee out again in the rematch and stayed champ until finally having to meet Thomas (which is the way it should have been imo). I would say or Page, but Page was simply way too inconsistent imo.

Marciano had great heart, freeky punches (especially for his size but not just), and just wouldn't see to quit. Did Dokes have any of those attributes.
