We'll say it is Pinklon Thomas who fought so well in beating Tim Witherspoon in 1984 vs the Dokes who beat Mike Weaver in a contraversial 1st round stoppage in 1982. Thomas is bigger and has a more power punch but Dokes is more mobile and faster. Plus Dokes was a decent banger himself. Both men experienced drug addiction although I believe Thomas was clean during his career. His addiction to heroin started at a very young age and he got himself clean. Dokes, on the other hand, started using cocaine at the height of his career and basically did not turn out to be as good as he could have been. Dokes had the potential to possibly be a great fighter. As it turned out he was still quite good.

    Who wins it?

I like Dokes. Both can be considered underachievers but IMO Dokes showed what "could have been" more so than Thomas. Both won world titles and started their careers with nice undefeated streaks, both went downhill pretty fast after losing their title. Both struggled with drugs. They were close on many things actually...

Dokes is 6'3" with a 78" reach and about 215-220 Lbs. at his best. 53-6-2 (34) overall (5 KO losses) and 1-2-1 (1) in HW World Title fights.

Thomas is 6'3" with a 77" reach and about 215-220 Lbs. at his best. 43-7-1 (34) overall (5 KO losses) and 2-2 (1) in HW World Title fights.

Dokes went undefeated from Oct. 1976 - Sep. 1983 going 26-0-2 (15) overall and 1-0-1 (1) in HW World Title fights (both fights vs. Weaver).

Dokes fought Terry Mims W8, Jimmy Young W10, Lucien Rodriguez W10, Ossie Ocasio D10 and KO1, Tex Cobb W10 and WTD4, Mike Weaver KO1 and D12, Gerrie Coetzee LKOby10, Evander Holyfield LKOby10, Razor Ruddock LKOby4, and others.

Thomas went undefeated from Aug. 1978 - Mar. 1986 going 26-0-1 (22) overall and 2-0 (1) in HW World Title fights.

Thomas fought Quick Tillis KO8, Gerrie Coetzee D10, Alfonso Ratliff KO10, Tim Witherspoon W12, Mike Weaver KO8, Trevoe Berbick L12, Mike Tyson LKOby6, Evander Holyfield LKOby7, and others.

It's a close tough fight IMO. Dokes does just a little more and gets the decision.

People forget at one point Pinklon Thomas was rated # 1 heavyweight in the world over holmes. Holmes would not fight Pinky. This was a major fight which should have happened.

I def like Pinklon in this fight. The major rap on Dokes has always been, he can't get away from a good jab. Pinklon had the 2nd best jab of that era. I think he will carve up dokes and stop him late with a big right hand(like the coeztee ko)

This is true. Thomas was all set to be the next big thing... but it never happened.

Thomas squeeked by a lazy Witherspoon (WMD12) to win the WBC title.

He stopped Weaver in 8 in 1985. Weaver had given Holmes (1973) and Dokes (1983) tough fights. Weaver had also recently beat Tate KO15, Coetzee KO13, and Tillis W15. This was the fight that got Thomas respected.

Thomas went on to lose the title by close decision to Berbick. He later was crushed by Tyson, then Holyfield.

With that said, I don't feel that Thomas was quite the fighter that many felt he was back in those days... not saying Dokes was.

Dokes was a great amateur fighter as well it should be noted. He lost a very close decision to the great Cuban heavyweight legend Stevenson by just a 3-2 points verdict. I think this was around 1976 or so when Stevenson was at his best. He also beat John Tate and Greg Page in the amateurs. I got this info off of Dokes' wikapedia page.

I think Dokes, based on his resume, impressed me a tad more than Pinklon did.Michael takes Thomas on a 12 or 15 rd UD, but it would be a very close fight.Another interesting thing to note about Dokes was he made it to the Golden Gloves and AAU finals......at 15! But Tate caught him at the right time in the Olympic Trials to beat him.

The thread starter listed Pinklon as being bigger when in fact they were exactly the same size for the fights given. Dokes 6’3 216 lbs for the first Weaver fight and had a reach of 78 inches. Thomas was 6’3” 216 lbs for the Witherspoon match and actually had a slightly shorter reach at 76 inches. Thomas had more power and a better left jab. Dokes in my opinion had faster hands and was a slightly better two-handed fighter. Both could go fifteen rounds. Both were fairly durable but could also be stopped. My guess is that this goes the distance in a very close chess match. The winner will depend on who is in better form and wants it more. I really think it’s up for grabs

Neither was a legit 6'3". I think Dokes showed and did a little more pre-title. Dokes by UD in a close fight.

Dokes didn't have enough firepower to worry Pinky, but Pinky had more than enough to stop the former.

Dokes does his cute, third-rate Aaron Prior thing in the beginning and it gets him through the first few rounds. After that Thomas' jab becomes more and more daunting. Dokes tries a bunch of tricks but he's holding a lot starting in round 7, gassing bad too.

I can see a single Thomas right ruining Michael's day around the 9th or 10th round. From there the ref saves him.

Thomas gave interviews as a pro in which he was visibly wasted.

I go with Thomas anyway. Dokes was the least of the eighties WBA flash in the pans without much on his record to hang his hat on.
