Yeah I remember that well Don't think he 'threw it', there are better ways than that to throw a fight His head was just wrong, which Gomez is clearly susceptible to I think many boxers reach a point where fighting just seems pointless, the fire has gone out... even if that feeling is only temporary
Bizarre ending. There was an investigation into the outcome of that fight. Think some betting was suspended at the time as there was speculation of a scam/fix. Gomez was due to rematch McDonagh this month but the Khan fight came along....
Wouldn't be surprised if ITV don't mention the Gomez v McDonagh bout at all during their pre-fight coverage for the Khan match up.
Definitely. He took the whole 'champions shouldn't be stopped' thing to epically stupid proportions (the ref, that is).
Arthur / Gomez was phenomenal ( and Im an Arthur fan ! ) Gomez was a machine that night. I would love to know if Gomez said something to Alex or what , Alex just wouldnt defend himself and kept trying to walk through Gomez whos toughness is legendary. A Brilliant fight ! Wish Gomez all the best against Khan but I dont think he is quite the fighter he was when he did that to Alex. And yeah i agree about the ITV build up , its going to be painful , think I'll watch it with the sound down till the fight starts ! This may be utter balls but I heard that Arthur and Gomez are actually quite friendly now ?
Absolutely true - I can tell you first hand Gomez has nothing but good things to say about Arthur and Craig Doherty they are in regular contact. :good
I remember me and my Dad were over in Glasgow for a Celtic match that weekend. We wen't out to the pub to watch that fight, and almost got our heads kicked in we were screaming that much for Gomez...it would have been worth the beating just to see that beating...great fight.
Class fight, bet Arthur learnt a lot from that, not taking anything away from Gomez he got it spot on. But that was then, still even if shades of that Gomez comes out for Khan it will take him into further rounds....
It was an incredible fight. The most annoying thing from my point of view (being an Arthur fan) was him throwing away his game plan like he did. Had he kept his head, it would have been a different fight altogether. But by doing what he did, he made the fight what it is, which is a corker! Hated Gomez back then, but he seems to have mellowed down. Strange how him and Arthur are mates now, but good to see respect shine through after such a brutal bout.
Amazing fight. I heard a rumour that Arthur didn't pay Gomez out on a bet after that fight? Quite a lot of money...
