Michael Grant continues winning streak...

The kid what a good hope but his sluggin stile and his weak chin didn't help him to become a great fighter, if he change his stile and become more of a boxer and watch about his chin, he could be a good contender again.

 

Umm Lenox had succes with that stile right, so why not adopt that stile.

I wasn't comparing the two fighters talent wise, I was using him as an example of what can happend to a fighter when they aren't there mentally.

I'am the farthest thing from a noob. You're trying to pass off Richie Woodhall as a worldclass opoonent.

 

Exactly. Grant needed to use his height more throughout his career because he didn't have a great chin. He probably would have won a belt, maybe he wouldn't have beat Lewis but he probably would have beaten McCline and Guinn and then would have gotten another shot at the title.

 

I'd like to see Grant get back in the title picture, but he'll probably step up to the elite and get KO'd again.

 

The Grant-Guinn fight...

The silly thing about that is that Atlas was banging on with motivational speeches and 'Eye of the Tiger' BS. "You have to rise!" Wheras all he really needed to say was two things.

"Don't throw the right uppercut when you're on the inside."
"Stay on the outside and jab."

Simple as that. About three, if not all four of the knockdowns were caused or started by Guinn dodging a right uppercut on the inside and countering with a big left hook. Grant doesn't do that, Guinn doesn't land his left like that. And if Grant stays out and jabs instead, Guinn doesn't even get that chance. He wasn't all that busy himself. A straightforward stream of jab-rights would've been enough, they were in other Guinn fights.

Two bits of advice you could get from almost anyone. How difficult is that? But Teddy wanted to do his Moorer-esque grand speeches for the camera instead.

You beat me to saying what I was gonna say about Guinn not being that busy in that fight. I remember Ronnie Shields getting very upset with him in the corner as he would become very lackadaisical during the rounds. From what I remember, Guinn really wasn't doing much at all between the knockdowns and seemed to show the early signs of the tentativity we have grown accustomed to seeing from him. The knockdowns simply made the overall performance more explosive and showy than it really was as the time inbetween was rather nondesrcipt with neither fighter really committing to any sustained attack. I'm pretty sure that even after the early assault, Grant came back to win a round (or 2 - been so long so I don't remember), which is what eventually triggered Shields.

Another thing, I remember Teddy Atlas and Michael Grant being interviewed together after Grant had just stopped Gilbert Martinez. Teddy spoke to the commentator as Grant just kind of stood there with a sheepish look on his face. It almost reminded me of a father talking about his son's bad behavior with the prinicpal to the embarassment of the son. I do believe that Teddy had Grant's best interests at heart but his approach can be very abrasive and counterproductive.

 

i never stated woodhall as a world class opponet. as a matter affact i didn't even put him in the list of his most notable fights take a look NOOB :good

Well, looking at the recent photo of Grant beating on the AVERAGE Peter Marinaccio, I can see that Grant is still pretty ripped and looks tight with muscle.... I hate these "Dokes, Tubbs, & Buster Douglas" slobs who balloon up to 300 pounds before embarking on a comeback...
