I was musing on the upcoming Kōno vs. Concepción match-up for the WBA super flyweight title and made this observation:

Let's say they met in the late nineties, when both were at or near their 'peak' (even if their 'primes' didn't overlap necessarily, with McCall being several years older & debuting a decade earlier).

    Common opponents are:

    Lennox Lewis (Grant L by KO2; McCall TKO2 & L by TKO5)
Wallace McDaniel (Grant TKO8; McCall TKO3)
Lionel Butler (Grant DQ4; McCall SD10)
Mike Dixon (Grant TKO6; McCall TKO2)
Danny Wofford (Grant UD8; McCall TKO5)

Big Mike has 5" of height and four of reach on the Atomic Bull, and did swap blows for ten rounds with a harder-punching Golota (albeit down on the cards when he pulled it out, and had been down twice early) and for 12 well past his prime with Frans Botha and Tomasz Adamek (neither of whom probably hit as hard as McCall, but respectably middling and both are probably as near to him as he is to Golota in terms of HW power) but is unquestionably more fragile (gigantic understatement).

Odd that nothing came up when I searched this one; seems a fairly obvious and inevitable bit of hypothetical matchmaking considering how popular & rife the 90's HW division in particular seems to be for such things. (including plenty with either guy paired with various other names)

If we're talking the Emanuel Steward trained version of Oliver who defeated Lennox, I'll take that version of McCall over any version of Grant, including the Golota version of Grant (which is I believe Grant at his best).

I forgot your late-90s qualifier by the time I finished reading.

Well, I still think McCall would be dangerous the whole way through, and I think he could still win if he came in with his head on right. But I don't think that was the case for quite some time after he lost to Bruno.

I think Grant was peaking in 98-99 when he fought guys like Lou and Golota. So that period is his best chance, and he very well could outpoint Oliver at that time.

After Grant loses to Lennox, I think McCall takes it. Call me crazy but I think Oliver was actually better at various points of the early/mid 00s than he was in the late 90s.

Good post. Both of these guys were too iffy to make a solid pick one way or the other. I do however feel that Grant gets underrated as a contender. His career might have fallen short in some aspects but he was a winning machine in the late 90's.

McCall by decision over the underachiever Grant, who barely hangs on for a decision...getting decked a couple of times in the last couple of rounds.

Depends on McCall's state of mind as he had mental issues. Grant was a soft big man with a shaky chin. Maybe he was the better boxer here.

    On their better nights, I'd pick McCall via TKO;

McCall by late KO, in a better than expected fight.

McCall had far better chin, hit harder, and as slow as he was - he wasn't slower than Grant.

McCall can eat Grant's best punches, unlike Grant.

However, Michael was tough enough to get up and last few rounds even when his chin failed.

Before Grant had his confidence shattered, I think he proved he could deal with a guy like McCall. He beat Savarese, Izon, and Sullivan who shared some similarities. The one guy who really fought a lot like McCall was Purrity though. Going on boxrec, Grant beat him when he was hot; Purrity was in the middle of 15-2-1 streak with wins over Hipp and Gonzalez, and a draw with Morrison. The other loss was to Rahman.

Good post! Prior to the Lewis fight Grant was a different fighter. After the Lewis fight he was never the same guy again. I remember him being heavily hyped as the next big thing back then by HBO among others. I'm going to go against the consensus here a put a vote in for the much larger and very athletic Grant. I've seen McCall look sloppy vs guys like a past prime Tony Tucker, I've seen him outboxed early by Bruce Seldon (before rallying for the tko) i think Michael can get this W.
