Thanks, that did actually cross my mind, that he'd done a stretch that is

Chad Dawson was actually a world champion. He beat Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson, Tomasz Adamek.

I can see wishing he'd done more. But he was a very successful champion.

Hunter had one title fight nearly a decade ago, was dominated, and somehow backed out, demanded more, or double-booked his way out of every eliminator or title fight offered to him after that.

Even comparing him with Dawson "as a disappointment" seems odd.

This year, the WBA insisted Pulev fight him (which the WBA didn't have to), a six-figure payday was on the table (cash in hand) ... more money than any promoter in the business was offering for the Pulev title fight ... and it wasn't good enough.

How do you screw that up? For what, a fight in York Hall in front of a couple hundred people?

There's every chance he'd have won the WBA belt two weeks ago if he just said yes.

Hunter is a fighter who literally and consciously destroyed his own career, but he still enjoys the praises of his loyal fans...

He is the Otto Wallin of the USA.

    I'll explain:

All of his shine - and the goodwill that he's been slowly burning through for years until nothing but embers and charred ashes remain - comes from giving a good account of himself in a competitive but clear loss (Wallin to Fury, Hunter to cruiserweight Usyk).

Name a good Wallin win. Murat Gassiev? Okay...barely, controversially, in a division where Gassiev doesn't belong.

Name a good Hunter win. Sergey Kuzmin? Okay...well Kuzmin was a great amateur but waited far too long to go professional and left the best of himself behind. Glorified can-crusher in the pros.

Name a good Wallin win besides Gassiev. ...hello, you there? This thing on? :D

Wallin and Hunter are both B level heavyweights with strong chins. Hunter has more skill, and Wallin has the advantage of being a southpaw. Yet you'd think, from hearing hype around both of them, that they have the right tool set to bother any heavyweight in history. They're both decent contenders, don't get me wrong - but by historical ATG standards? They're both mid.

Regarding the comparisons, Chad is one of my 10 favorite fighters in history, Hunter is/was my favorite contemporary (2000s) HW.....hence the comparison and level of disappointment. Hunter did nowhere what Chad did, but me personally, the level of frustration regarding their careers and the fallout was similar. Yeah Chad was a multi-world champion and considered the top guy at LHW for years. But he was also still a disappointment who left so much on the table. Every single trainer from Birmingham to Floyd to Manny all parroted the same thing....Manny even said he could've taken Chad to HW but he didn't have the desire.........but I digress.

But yeah, you're absolutely right about Hunter, it's almost like he's done everything he could possibly do to take himself out of positions that had been handed to him. He could've been a potential American standard bearer but................
