If Moorer comes to Cooney he gets stopped early, can he box effectively enough to avoid him for several rounds? Doubt it, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Cooney had flaws.
I think Cooney stops him but as Rein points out he had flaws. The worrying thing for Moorer is that Chin. I see it letting him down here.
Moorer is fairly better than Spinks IMO. Where'd all the Cooney love come from? I remember getting pushback for having him like 10th in the 80s.
Always liked Moorer but his chin was very shaky. Off the top of my head he was hurt by Alex Stewart and Frankie Swindell I (at light-heavy), floored by Bert Cooper and Holyfield in both fights. Koed by an ancient Foreman who had been hammered for 9 rounds and destroyed by Tua. Cooney was a terrific puncher and especially body puncher. He was hittable and his chin wasn´t concrete but the Cooney that gave Holmes a good fight would probably rally from an early points deficit to stop Moorer in about 8 rounds in a cracker.
I didn’t vote on the polls because I think it could go either way. Both guys had enough power to hurt the other and both had chins that could be dented. Both were usually fast starters. Moorer was a bit faster and had that southpaw stance while Cooney had the height and reach. I’m also guessing that there could be an exchange of knockdowns where both hit the canvas at some point. Who knows.. probably an entertaining fight for about 5-7 rounds. Take your pick
Moorer by late stoppage for me. Cooney has the power to stop him but Cooney found a way to lose despite being favourite at times while Moorer has that 1 big win over Holyfield.
I’m going to make a prediction not many will make and that’s Moorer inside of the distance, the reason being is Cooney’s poor gas tank and Moorer had decent stamina in all fairness, that tripled with the fact that Moorer did go for the finish when he had guys hurt and also that when Cooney does gas, he’s also a big target who didn’t have a great defence, which would mean by that point, Moorer would be teeing off on him, but it would be very dangerous early on for Moorer, but I see him escaping the early rounds on most occasions.
agreed. Also Moorer is left handed so Cooney, with his average defense, won't be able to read Moorer's punches. This is a super interesting match up because Moorer is a natural right hander who fought left handed and Cooney is a natural left hander who fought right handed. Lol.
