Obviously Johnson was a much more established and proven light heavy as Moorer only fought around 20 times in that class and didn't beat anyone of significance. But he certainly looked lethal and was exciting to watch. Both men had ferocious power at 175 and weren't too sound in the defense or durability department. I think this might have been an entertaining brawl between two light heavy hitters.
I think Marvin is up against it here, Moorer was a very skilled controlled Boxer, but then when you factor in his powr, menevolent attitude, and the fact that Marvin is a come forward aggressor, and i cant see Marvin being able to maintain a forward march for too long Moorer is not a wild gunslinger with little defence like saad, so i cant see Marvin dragging Moorer into a brawl whereby he might be able to land something decisive, When the leisurely 'Steady Eddie' Gregory broke Marvin down it was a masterclass of boby-punching, he chipped away and sculpted a very impressive victory, Well im afraid Mr Moorer is not so Leisurely, he was once quoted as saying 'I Crave Blood' but with his power cuts were not really a factor, He wanted the knockout, and with Marvins forward march Moorer would not have to go looking for him, I cant help but think that Marvin is not so much picked apart as blasted apart.. Pops gets popped before the half way stage. Bad style match-up for Marv.
Moorer was a sharpshooter with plenty of power. Johnson was a bobber and weaver, but not that hard to hit. He had great heart but not the chin. This might play like Moorer's brawl with Cooper, with Johnson having some big moments, but I think Moorer picks him apart and leaves him face-first on the floor around the 4th or 5th round.
:goodEddie was so relaxed in the ring. Imagine if he wasn't so lazy. Even when Michael Spinks knocked him down, he never seemed too flustered.
moorer wins, michael moorer was a natural cruiser, he was skin and bone at 175 and he would destroy nearly every lhw ever, he kills roy jones, kills him, moorer would ko archie moore and maybe even bob foster, spinks was another natural bigger guy so he has the best chance against moorer, but i don´t know, moorer wa sa beast at 175, and tell me the blablabla that you want, " he never was proved against anyone" , prime tyson neither... and still he was a h2h monster
I agree with the consensus in that Moorer would probably find the target mid-way through the fight, stopping Marvin Johnson in an otherwise very entertaining, very competitive bout. That being said, the available footage of Moorer as a Light Heavyweight is rather unimpressive. One-paced, predictable and lacking any sort of variety in his offensive a rsenal. There was nothing there to suggest to me he would have made any real noise at 175lbs. A big puncher certainly, but not a lot else.
This post is filled with fanboy emotion. Moorer's biggest win was a come from behind ko of a fading Leslie Stewart. And this was after Don Lalonde and Virgil Hill easily kod Stewart. Prime Tyson faced and beat tougher opposition. He had strentgth and power, and pretty good speed, but poor defense and could be hurt. Many LHW's could beat Moorer. Saad Muhammad would have outlasted him. Spinks would have outboxed him. Mustafa Muhammad, Qwai could have probably beaten him.
I was at Indy PAL with Johnson for about a year during his prime and saw him spar almost every day. I'd take Moorer and bet a big sack of cash on it every day. The idea that "the available tape we have on Moorer isn't very impressive" is a hoot. He sent guys flying like a Popeye cartoon and frequently had decent fighters in wobbly survival mode within the first minute. He was scary good and a killer. Marvin wasn't.
read again my post, i don´t have to say nothing more. michael moorer destroys roy jones at 175, qawi is too small for him and qawi was a pressure guy, not a monster puncher, moorer could be hurt against hws, at lhw he wa smuch more durable, he beats saad muhammad too, spinks is the only one in your list that he could do it
Struggling with an aged Leslie Stewart and struggling to get rid of a Danny Stonewalker showed up Moorer's limitations. Not surprisingly really as he was a novice. And although he had his limits I would always pick Johnson over a novice at 175. Marvin in about eight; Moorer did not show anything other than potential at 175; Johnson made a career at 175lbs.
I read it There is nothing to say Moorer could beat any of the guys you mentioned Theirs was a survival of the fittest era. Sure, Moorer had huge potential at 175 lbs. But, he didn't fulfill it. Instead of testing himself against the best 175 guys of his era, which by the way, wasn't as strong as the late '70's early 80's era, he moved up. Fights against the likes of Virgill Hill or Prince Charles Williams were never made. What we do know is his two biggest tests were fringe contender Frankie Swindell, and a faded former champ. Stewart - and he struggled with both. I am suprised so many favor him over Johnson, actually.
This is partially why I'm surprised that so many have this as an easy one sided affair for Moorer. While I concur that Michael would probably win on the basis of Johnson's shaky chin and style, I think Marvin also had plenty to hurt with. Moorer wasn't all that hard to hit himself.. Marvin had power, heart, skill and tangoed with some of the best light heavys ever.. Moorer as you say fought a shot Leslie Stewart, Frankie Swindell, Freddie Delgado and a bunch of guys most have never heard of.. Not an easy flight by my reconning..
