Kovalev, and it isn't even close. He is just too naturally heavy handed for Moorer. Every punch he throws is just hurtful, without him having to strain himself. I don't know how or why Avetisyan lasted the 6 rounds, but he rematched Darnell Boone who had lasted 8 and stopped him in 2 rounds. As for Hopkins, it was only the sentimental ref who allowed him to see the last round out when Kovc opened up on him in the 12th. He was gone, being knocked all around the ring throwing nothing back.
I guess it was the sentimental ref that helped Hop survive the numerous other times he was hurt without going down or being sparked out?
Moorer may be one of the few light heavyweights who's power rivals Kovalev's. In addition, he was a tall rangy light heavyweight, with a south paw style, fast hand speed and one of the greatest trainers of all time in his corner. We should also remember that while Michael gets a bad rap for having a shaky chin, it wasn't until he was in the ring with hard punching "heavyweights" that he experienced some stoppage losses. I'd probably have to favor Sergei as he is more proven at 175, but this would be a war and I wouldn't be surprised with any result.
Interesting assertion, considering Moorer was only stopped by 2 of the biggest punchers the world has ever seen. Has a come off the floor victory against a top 10 heavyweight and got up 5 times before the ring doctor pulled him out of the rematch. I know Moorer's chin has it's question marks, but on the evidence I've presented it's hard to write him off at the click of a finger.
At light heavyweight Moorer stopped Leslie Stewart, who in my humble opinon was better than Pascal, he beat Frankie Swindell, who was better than Darnell Boone, then he beat a bunch of guys who were on the level of Kovalev's opponents. He didn't fight a guy like 50 year old Hopkins, but there is not a snowball's chance in hell that Hopkins would have gone into the ring with 6'2 southpaw, Micheal Moorer. He signed to fight Kovalev because the thought he could win. The latest is always the greatest especially amongst young guys, but in the 40 years I have watched boxing the best LHWTS have been: 1. Michael Spinks 2. Roy Jones 3. Michael Moorer 4. Dwight Muhammad Qawi. Kovalev is a good fighter, but I think those four would have beaten him, and the first three almost certainly. All four of those guys moved to heavyweight, Spinks beat Larry Holmes x2 and Gerry ****ey. Kovalev's people would have to think twice before they put him in the ring with ****ey NOW. Roy Jones easily beat Ruiz, and Qawi, a 5'6 guy with a terrible coke habit and a bowling ball for a stomach went 7 rounds with George Foreman on 2-week's notice. Of course they'd all lay down if Kovalev hit them once.
BTW, against the next tier of guys, Matthew Saad Muhammad Victor Galiendez Eddie Mustapha Muhammad Virgil Hill Michaelchewski Marvin Johnson etc. Kovalev wins more than he loses.
The competition is tougher in this tier...Kovalev beats Marvin Johnson and Michelchewski, but it's too soon to tell about the other four..
Michael Spinks whole reputation was ruined by Mike Tyson, people just don't realize what a mean, sadistic, talented ******* he was... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn8YRblGky8
Yeah, that's what vindicates me in believing that Spinks would have ko'ed Roy Jones Jr...it would be round after round of Spinks looking bad, when at some time, late in the fight BOOM, Roy's lights would go out.
Moorer would murder Kovalev... Kovalev has beaten a 50yr old Hopkins and Pascal who Carl Froch beat 10yrs ago.. Southpaw Moorer would take the guy apart.
I'm surprised at how one sided the consensus is in Kovalev's favor... Like I said I think Kovalev may be a top ten light heavyweight but Moorer may have been one of the very best ever in the division. I feel Michael Moorer is one of the most underrated fighters of all time. His crisp short punches were a thing of beauty to watch, very technically sound fighter. Its astonishing to me how much success he had at heavyweight being so small compared to his opponents and also at times seeming to really lack motivation he was still able to win almost every time. I'm pretty confident he would've beat Kovalev, the only thing that gives Kovalev a solid shot is his power. Kovalev has pretty scary power and good skills to go along with it I could see him getting to Moorer's body perhaps but still I doubt it. Moorer when he was at light heavyweight seemed very determined and I feel his technique would prevail. I really want to see Kovalev vs Stevenson.. I feel both guy could prove to be great light heavyweights a match up between the two will tell a lot about both of them it really should happen. Its clear Kovalev can dish it out but how well can he take it, Stevenson I think is the guy who'd ultimately give us the answer to that question. Pascal and Cleverly were pretty good, and BHop is as crafty as it gets but none of them are nearly as good offensively as Moorer. I feel a young Michael Moorer would've had similar results against all of them maybe even stopping Hopkins.
All I will say at the moment, is that Kovalev can probably have success at cruiser weight if he chooses.
Moorer wins this, the faster southpaw, with better hand speed, and equal power, and was better at LHW, than Heavy, Kovalev doesn't have speed, and a lousy defense, Pascal hit him a lot and rung his bell a few times, and even looked like Pascal put him on the canvas but that dumb ass ref blew the call, Moorer would take him out..
