Anyone think this guys under rated today? He DID beat Evander Holyfield. Yes, Holyfield wasn't 100 percent but he was still relatively young and would have great fights for years after it. And even in the rematch, Moorer seriously shook up Holyfield before falling. On top of that, he has some nice wins. Bert Cooper when fully motivated can be a handful for just about anyone and Moorer knocked him out in a great fight, showing a lot of heart and punching power. Alex Stewart had monstrous power and some skills, Moorer also knocked him out in a very entertaining fight. He also has wins over an unbeaten Vaughn Bean, Axel Schultz who was recently removed from his Foreman fight, and an undefeated Frans Botha. I'm not saying he's a top 20 ATG or anything, but the guy had power, skills, and heart. His durability wasn't his strong point but he has enough wins over guys that could crack to prove that his chin isn't as bad as often thought.
I think he is rated accordingly. Perhaps overrated as a light heavyweight due to lack of accomplishments.
I don't think he's as underrated as much as he seems like an enigma. I knew of him from the loss to Foreman for many years. Later, when I looked deeper I saw this former Kronk trained light-heavyweight who was a true dark horse. He held his LHW title when WBO recognition was slim to none and Moorer himself looked pretty damn sharp. I saw articles of him being praised as the "next big thing" and a true world beater in the making. His rise in the HW ranks also looks pretty damn sharp and he did a good job in out-hustling Holyfield despite the whole Teddy Atlas relationship at that time. That loss to Foreman wrecked him at the point he was already cracking at the seams. I've also heard rumblings of alcoholism. Either way, he was pretty solid and captured a couple pieces of the title. I see him as this enigma because he showed so much more potential starting out, and then he fizzled when he got close to the top. Kinda like Bowe except not as lazy or as self destructive.
I just see Moorer get lumped in with guys who have no business being discussed with him. Here's his fight with Alex Stewart. Really awesome fight and Moorer takes some monster shots from Stewart (whose record at that point was 27-2 with 27 knockouts) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdRXFNHNqlE&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS9TRbtlkhs&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huw8an34GbA&feature=related[/ame] Had the first round been 5 seconds longer Moorer probably would of had a first round KO. He looked really sharp, the right uppercuts he landed to finish it were brutal.
Moorer chose to fight many other fighters fights. Cooper, Stewart, Holyfield. I find it telling that he was able to out-do them at their own games, outbrawling two huge sluggers. He would certainly be more fondly remembered as a good heavyweight if he had used his skills more, as opposed to a exciting one.
The thing with Moorer was that when he got tagged, he instantly started throwing serious leather back. It does speak to his offensive ability that he was able to win slugfests against punchers of Stewarts and Coopers magnitude though, all the while having somewhat questionable durability. Moorer was a big hitter, even at HW.
Yes. I always feel he gets underrated. I think his durability is underrated, his skill is underrated, and his flaws get overrated. I think he was a great fighter at his best.
Moorer was a very skilled fighter, but I never felt he was a great heavyweight. He didnt really have the chin to fight in the style he fought in (flat footed in the pocket), but he had a good jab and good skills off his jab. He matched up nicely with smaller heavyweights, but the big guys would have always done a number on him because he was too easy to hit.
Moorer struggles more against swarmers than big guys i.e. punchers imo. Big guys tend to be more sloppier, thus leaving more openings for Moorer to strike. Swarmers are all wrong for Moorer, proven by Cooper and Tuaman.
He stood in front of opponents. Thats why he was knocked out by Foreman, Holyfield, Tua and hurt by several others. He was just too flat footed and lacking defensively to be a heavy with his poor chin.
I sort of disagree. His chin and durability weren't his strong points but taking the best from the likes of Cooper and Stewart and then knocking them out showed he was very dangerous, even at HW. Moorer was very faded and fat to boot when Tua knocked him out. Tua is a horrible matchup for him, and getting stopped by the Tuaman is no huge blemish anyway. Moorer showed up in **** shape against Holy in the rematch, I believe he hurt his shoulder and could hardly train. Even in this bout he seriously shook up Holyfield and Holy is a top ten caliber heavyweight anyway, no shame in going 1-1 with him. The key to beating Foreman was movement. Foreman's style was all wrong for him but he still beat the **** out of him for 10 rounds.
Cmon, he was hurt by just about everyone including Frans Botha. It didn't take much to move away from Foreman yet he still managed to get flattened. Moorer had the power and had good leverage behind his punches but his footwork and chin were ****
Actually, the guy had good legs as an early day heavyweight up thru the first Holyfield bout. He sure was turning Evander in there and had him walking into jabs. But when he put on pounds and went up past 214 or so, it was at the expense of his legs. He became a flat footed guy in there and used literally zero mobility once he decided to skyrocket past 215 pounds.
