Enlighten us... Fringe contenders he lost to: Dennis Milton and Ralph Ward. Well yes, he was losing to fringe contenders... But the quantitative evidence is, that any fringe contender to world class fighter that makes it though the first five rounds, beats McClellan. There is nothing to show otherwise.
**** not just G-Man! Hell Manny would probably tell us right now that Andy Lee would have beaten Monzon. Not comparing G-Man to Lee, obviously McClellan was a light year better than Andy. I'm just sayin. Manny Steward's opinions are not to be taken seriously. People hold Steward on WAAYY too high a pedestal. In reality, Manny says alot of DUMB ****! Thats not even mentioning the fact that of course he's NEVER been wrong on the outcome of a fight. Why even have fights on HBO when Manny is commentating? Manny always sees the results before they come, and they're always "Just as I expected."
DeMarco-Linares commentating put me in a state of shock! The way Steward and Kellerman threw names of Robinson and Duran in comparison to Linares, hyped Linares' incredible balance, athletism, skills etc was an ATG commentating stuff!:rofl Of course when Linares got stopped it was exactly what Manny was expecting
I have G-Man career set and what fight on film proved that he was able to be outboxed? People here are saying he would be outbox with no real evidence as to why.
If G-Man is outboxed by Ralph Ward and Dennis Milton, even his harshest critic, has to concede that Nunn would have the ability to outbox McClellan.
Evander Holyfield was coming off some pretty bad points in his career. Gary Bell was hired as a sparring partner to emulate Tyson. Holyfield was having a difficult time handling the rough style of a young fighter who kept coming at him and was on the verge of calling off the Tyson fight because of it. After three weeks Holyfield was kicking Bell's ass and then handling Tua well as well. Its a completely different circumstance to a young fighter like Mclellan boxing well against Hearns and Mcallum. Mclellan also defeated Roy Jones in the amatuers. I think his boxing pedigree was pretty good maybe just not over the course of a longer fight. Managerial and promotional problems. Mclellans head really wasnt into boxing around this time and he wasnt physically preparing for fights well. Mclellan wasnt outclassed just not really mentally there. It was also his 11th fight as a pro. We've seen similar circumstances with fighters. Bernard Hopkins lost his pro debut do you hold that against him? Dont think Mclellan was much of a seasoned veteran some 11 fights into his pro career. He has two 8 round victories after those losses and was ahead of Benn when the fight was stopped.
He was ahead at the time of the stoppage? What does that matter? The Truth Williams had landed more punches than Tyson; Tubbs won the first round against Tyson; Holmes was starting to enjoy himself against Tyson... The fight was a 12 rounder. The trick is to either stop your opponent or be ahead on points after 12 rounds. If you do not do that, then generally you lose the fight....
Steward says McClellan out-boxed Sugar Ray Leonard and Michael Moorer back-to-back in '88. Interesting.
