Nunn came around when Leonard, Hagler, and Hearns were getting older. IMO, he'd beat all of them in 1989, and Duran would have zero chance. Nunn vs Toney ( 1991 ) was a classic. Nunn was in the lead by 5-6 rounds when Toney clipped him in the 11th with a left hook that turned Nunn sideways.
the way toney began to grind nunn down and get back into that fight before the ko is too often overlooked. it certainly wasn't just a hail mary from nowhere.
This fight was nearly made and Nunn was a favorite .knowing what we know now I think hearns would win clearly.
Nunn fought foolishly and wanted to punish the mouthy Toney. Toney missed several bombs just prior to catching Nunn with his best. Toney had issues with speed. Always has, but back then he was in shape and motivated. I'd pick Nunn over an older Tommy Hearns.
Toney was going to the body too and slowing Nunn down. Add to that, I always heard that Nunn had a large lead on the cards, but Toney was competitive in every round.
