Michael Nunn's KO over Sumbu Kalambay

You sure about that? I bet if they fought another 5 times that Nunn wouldn't have stopped or even decked Kalambay.

 

He hit him on the button, pal. Hardly a fluke. It was the perfect shot.

 

Well you could say that about any 1 punch KO. By your definition, there are not flukish 1 punch kos.

To me this, Jose Quinones KO Doug DeWitt, Lennox lewis ko by 2 Oliver McCall and Primo Ramos ko 2 Frankie Randall are four of the most "flukish" one punch kos I've seen.

 

Fenech getting stopped by Grove was a case of a once great fighter losing his chin. Fenech had taken a lot of punishment over many years, and it caught up to him. He was way past it.

Sean O'Grady once said, "The chin is like a cash register, it can only take so much, then it pops open"

 

I think Nunn would have won a decision using his legs, height and reach. It probably would have been a boring fight - which is what most experts thought would happen. The flukish KO made it exciting.

 

What a great performance in a tough matchup against a premier opponent. We seldom see those kinds of results and any chance of a Leonard fight for Nunn went down the drain in a nanosecond after Sambu hit the canvas.

 

It was a great performance.

I get your point, but your math is off.

A guy called Ray Sefo was a K-1 Kickboxer with a chin of iron, yet got STARCHED by a journeyman in Boxing.

Another legendary fighter from that disciple (and MMA) is Mark Hunt. PHENOMENAL chin. Got laid out by a MUCH smaller yet super hard hitting guy, but was taking HEADKICKS FOR FUN at one point.

If someone finds your button, you're gone. They can be feather-fisted or you can have a "chin of iron", it doesn't matter.

Nunn just hit him flush in the perfect spot. It happens.

 

I LOVED this fight! Sumbu beat my man McCallum and ascended the throne as the TRUE middleweight champion as opposed to that OTHER middleweight champion. it proved his legitimacy much the way Frazier did it 68-70

could he now handle the young upstart Nunn with dyn-o-mite! in his left hand?

Mike was sharp that nite, even sharper than Sumbu and VERy quick on his feet the way a boxer is supposed to

what that fight illustrates--or screams---is a guy doing his homework before the fight. The second part is to actually capitalize in a quarter of a second that window opens. He did not have to go back to his corner and listen to instructions or anything. he saw the opportunity he was waiting for and cashed in.

How many other fighters or fights have we seen through the years where a guy should have done more homework & closed the show when a window was cracked open for him?

 

Didn't Sambu throw a lazy right that was blocked by Nunn's right, followed by a precision left hand grenade. Michael Nunn was a talent and a craftman when his was on track. Loved his style.

 

Think he slipped a jab and countered with the left. Wasn't really anything Sumbu did wrong, Nunn just time it perfectly. A can't recall any other such perfect move in a fight of such magnitude.

 

Kalambay threw a left jab and put his feet in a really bad position.
So Nunn didn't really have to shoot his southpaw left past Sumbu's right, because Sumbu had opened himself up by getting his lead foot well inside of the southpaw's lead foot. He opened himself with the angles.
It was a bad mistake and Nunn capitalized.
