Michael Nunn's KO over Sumbu Kalambay

Wow.

I wish you could see jus how unbothered by first round KO's I actually am. I m erely stated that as a rule, 1st round KOs are rare between two world class opponents. Now you'really protracting that out further to say that somehow these fights bother me? WTF?

Why would they bother me? Why would anyone have an emotional attachment to the duration of a fight?

 

He's respected but has no Tyson (add many other names, Tyson is just an example) like fanbase/haters who are found in significant percentages at the far ends of the scale.

The reason some are calling it a fluke is simply because they believe the "result" to be a fluke. There's no bias involved.

I personally haven't called it a fluke but if it isn't then no orthodox finish or result in boxing history could be called a fluke i'd think.

At the absolute minimum this result is an absolute freak one.

 

I'm of two minds here. Just because something happens it doesn't mean it can't be a fluke. But on the other hand Kalambay was at his worst against southpaws it seems. Sometime I'll revisit his fights with Kalule and Graham and see if he made the same mistake against them.

 

You're right .. if they fought ten more times it would have gone to a tight decision one way of the other .. this was one of those freak things ..

Herol Graham was like Nunn,and just as awkward hard to hit.you choose to neglect his example.

Sumbu beat a faster,younger,slicker southpaw there.

As an old trainer I knew used to say when he saw a guy look down, “Ain’t no dimes down there. Keep your eyes on your opponent.”

 

it was no fluke. Sumbu didnt see the punch coming , even a big wind up punch. Problems with southpaws? all he fought till then was mediocre Sims

 

Watching it again:

1) It’s a minuscule sample size but Nunn was having his way in the round before the knockout. Got in a good rhythm early. Not to say Sumbu couldn’t have found some things that worked had it gone several rounds but that’s nothing here to indicate it.

2) Whether it was in the first when it happened or later on, I think a Nunn KO is inevitable. This isn’t a lucky punch. Sumbu horribly stepped inside the front foot and put himself right in the wheelhouse. He may was well have put a target on his chin that said ‘hit me here.’

If he made this error in less than a round, I can’t see him going 12 and not doing it again, and enough times that sooner or later Nunn pounces on it. It wasn’t a misstep, it was an oblivious error … like he didn’t know better. There’s no evidence that he had any plan to keep his foot outside to position himself better.

That’s my take.
