Michael Spinks 1977 vs John Conteh 1977, 15 Rounds, 175 lbs. Could the 1976 gold medalist wrest the light heavyweight crown from the reigning WBC light heavyweight champion?
No he couldn't. Conteh was exiting his prime perhaps, but was still one of the best light heavies in the world. Spinks was just an ameteur as far he was concerned. Never at any point in time would a choose any light heavy to defeat Michael Spinks by a knockout, but have Conteh winning a decision. Maybe Spinks surprises us by pushing for one judge's card, but I doubt it and would expect nothing better from Spinks. Anything more would be nothing short of miraculous.
I agree, Conteh looked phenomenal beating Len Hutchins in 1977, too bad he did not go through with his mandatory match against Miguel Angel Cuello in Monte Carlo, Monaco in May 1977.
i would have to agree, though anything earlier i would favor Conteh; it's amazing how there's no yr. btwn them where either one could win
