Hi guys. I recently bought a Michael Spinks career set on DVD.

The only Michael Spink's fight I have seen is his brief encounter with Tyson. I have never seen any of his other fights. I have heard him discussed to a significant extent in other forums but I have yet to form my own opinion on him based on watching him fight. I now have 27 of his 32 fights on DVD, excluding a few of his earlier fights.

I'm going to watch all of these fights and post my opinions and thoughts of them on this thread. If there are any online copies of these fights available I will also post them in this forum. I hope this thread gets a significant amount of discussions going around Michael Spinks- his fights, his place in history and just a general appreciation of what most people seem to consider one of the greatest Light Heavyweights of all time and a legend of the sport.

In his pro debit Michael Spinks towers over his opponent. A strange fight in the sense that the knockdowns seem to come from soft punches but Benson was definitely game, coming forward and throwing wild punches. Spinks was very composed, keeping his cool and throwing accurate nice shots. A good pro debut

Michael Spinks second pro fight. He fights Luis Rodriguez. A very tough fight that goes all 6. Rodriguez came to fight and he gave Spinks a rough night. He really had no problem with slugging it out with Spinks and he did well to last all 6. A tough fight that can be really beneficial for young prospects to have early on. Spinks looked good considering it was his second pro fight but he does get hit with a number of clubbing shots and there were moments where he could have let more power punches go. Good fight.

Michael Spink's third fight vs Joe Borden. A much more patient Spinks who really took his time. Borden with a sloppy combination in the second. After he finished he had his hands low and Spinks cright hand drops him. Two knockdowns later and the ref waves it off. A nice patient performance from Spinks who takes his time before finishing it off. Very classy.

Fourth fight, against Brisbane. Brisbane looks very classy and has Spinks in trouble in the second round with a few good shots. Spink's responds very well and finishes of Brisbane. For me, easily his best performance so far. His killer instinct looked great here.

The Eddie Davis fight is an interesting Spinks fight that is rarely discussed. Surprisingly close fight, and the fact that one judge gave it to Spinks by a landslide made it controversial.

He was very good. A great? yes I would say so. The Tyson fight was just Michael finally fighting someone who fought like a heavyweight, and Michael was not a real heavyweight. But give Tyson his due there, he won against a top guy. Spinks in today's light heavyweights would be undefeated easily.

Fifth win of Elson is not on Youtube unfortunately but it lasts under a minute. A nice right hand goes around Elson's guard, dropping him seemingly unconscious for a while.

I think Spinks and Hearns and Leonard were the guys of the 1980s who had a lot of amateur experience who turned it into good professional careers. Today we don't have that as much. Spence come to mind. Very skilled experience from the amateurs from that era, which is why they were so much fun to watch. Jabs and rights, very technical and breaking down fighters.

Sixth with for Spinks over Tom Bethea. A good fight Bethea really pushed the pace and kept on top of Spinks. Spinks showed his inexperience and stood toe to toe, using a tight guard to pick of shots. This and the Rodriguez fights were good learning fights.

    Check out Betheas boxrex.

He fought some monsters. Monzon, Benvenuti, Luis Manual Rodriguez, Bennie Briscoe, Bunny Sterling, Marvin Johnson, Marvin Camel

Spinks is a criminally underrated fighter. His win over Cooney is unjustifiably brushed under the carpet as a result of Cooney being completely shot, but to overcome such massive physical disadvantages against a guy with one shot KO power was to me superb.

There was nobody at 175 he avoided. His record at that weight would have been HOF worthy. The wins at heavyweight were just icing on the cake. It's a damn shame casual fans vaguely remember him for the Tyson fight.

Spinks was a great light heavyweight. Lost twice against Holmes though, the 2nd fight being a high way robbery

Spot on. Cooney was a giant who couldn't escape the Spinks Jinx. An excellent win for anyone in that division.

I also believe Spinks is the greatest Light Heavyweight, alongside Ezzard Charles and right above Moore, Conn and Foster.
