Just sitting around thinking (too much time on my hands today) about Michael Spinks. Running into a prime Tyson was about the worst thing and wrong style for him to face. How good do you view (not talking rankings or anything) as a HW? Who are some of the champs from the present to the past that he would give a good showing of himself and be competitive, which champs might he beat? How would he do against Walcott, Charles, Patterson, ingo or anyone else you might choose? Who is the best fighter you would pick him over?
He beats Sharkey,Carnera, Charles, ,Johansson, Leon, fitzsimmons,Tunney,Corbett, Braddock, and probably Schmelling too. Patterson beats him
He'd beat Walcott, but lose to Charles, Ingo and Patterson. The best fighters I'd pick him over are probably Tua and Vitali.
interesting. I would view Patterson, Schmeling, Tunney as 50/50 type of fights off of the top of my head.
interesting, what do you envision when you pick him over Vitali? I think Vitali would beat him. I like the Tua pick and if he can duplicate what he did against Qawi I can certainly get on board with that, but he would need to be cautious. I agree on Charles (but you are clearly biased lol)...Walcott is interesting I might edge toward Walcott but I think Michael would be competitive with both Charles and Walcott regardless of how the decision might go.
Well, I basically see Spinks working inside of Vitali's slower hands, and working his jab. Fighting in spurts, Spinks should stay on the outside trying to confuse Vitali with his weird upper-body movement and bobbing on his knees, then slip Vitali's slow arm punches. From there he should work his jab and whenever Vitali moves back, follow up with 1-2s. If Spinks can take his power, which I'm not convinced he can (or that he can't) then I think that strategy, plus whatever Futch dreams up for him, would work. Me? Bias? Never... I think Walcott vs Spinks would be very competitive, but Spinks' jab and reach advantage gets a win. He's better technically and quicker IMO, but doesn't have the same power as Walcott did. I can see Walcott stopping him, though. I agree Charles-Spinks would be very close. I actually think it's the hardest match up for Charles at light-heavy, and therefore a tough fight at heavyweight too.
I still think Vitali would be too big and strong and would stop Spinks...but I do appreciate your take. It has given me pause, to think. I still envision Vitali as the winner, but you make a good case for why fights don’t always unfold the way that we think they will. Good stuff
Spinks beating vitali lol and Tua probably would bomb him out(wait for any idiot mentioning Chris byrd)
Spinks beating charles lol and Ingo would probably bomb him out(wait for any idiot mentioning Floyd patterson)
Spinks slow starting at the end of a jab vs Vitali is not going to end well. I can see him schooling Walcott though. I think he has a good chance replicating the success of 64 Liston and 78 Spinks.
