Spinks would be the most precise puncher Usyk fought and the most skilled boxer. It would be pretty close.
Usyk is miles bigger than Spinks. Spinks in his prime could make 175 hours before the fight. Usyk has always been around 210 as pro before his rise to heavyweight. If they were the same size, Spinks would annihilate Usyk.
I think it would be competitive, but I pick Usyk. No disrespect to Michael, because he's my all time number 1 lightheavyweight.
Spinks was vicious in his day. Pick against him at your own Risk. Tough fight for me to call. Usyk is really athletic and a great boxer.
I think Spinks gets overrated above 175. I've never been too convinced by him north of there. He beat Holmes fair and square first time out but Larry had been flirting with defeat for a while (Witherspoon, Williams) and looked seriously old that night, as if his fighting instincts were beginning to desert him. Nevertheless, still a great win in context for Spinks and an impressive achievement. But after that? I thought he was damn lucky to get the verdict in the rematch. One defence of the IBF against a relative journeyman in Tangstad, ditches that to face an inactive, semi-retired Cooney who was beset by personal issues rather than Tucker - and then goes out like a lamb against Tyson. Fair enough, Cruiserweight held zero appeal for Spinks at the time and if he'd boxed a few fights at 190 as it was then we might have a more accurate picture and I might be able to envision a better case for him. But even as Cruisers I think Usyk would have been appreciably the bigger man come fight night and I think with his proven and repeated prowess at 200 (and above now) I'd say it's looking good for him in this matchup.
I don't know. Usyk wouldn't be a danger to Spinks the way a young Tyson was. But Spinks, while being a great LHW puncher, didn't carry enough at heavyweight to crack a Usyk chin. Usyk was also a southpaw, however Spinks did KO Johnson, a southpaw. Head scratcher for me.
