There's no need for that. I get that too. Nobody believes me when I say Camacho tore up Pernell in a 1985 sparring session. I didnt see it either, I kust read about it in magazine. Which one? I have it stored away but can't look for it now.

I think its fair to say that the version of Michael Spinks that Tyson beat in 1988, was a man who was not only aging, but had lost interest in the sport. Of course, this shouldn't take anything away from Tyson, as it was still a very impressive performance, plus I firmly believe that he would have beaten any version of Spinks. My only point, is that it does not surprise me that fighters were making him look bad in sparring. After the Holmes fights, michael had lost his desire to prove himself the best, and took only the big paying fights. Its also debatable as to how hard he was training in between matches, as some of them were a year apart from one another.

Spinks had already done just about everything that a fighter could possibly endeavor to do. He won the gold medal. He dominated his perspective weight class. He became the first lightheavyweight champion to become heavyweight champ. He was a multi-millionaire several times over. As a single parent and a man tired of the hype, Spinks no longer had reason to prove himself as a fighter and more specifially a heavyweight...

I couldn't picture it.. Mike was very hard to nail and could hit extremely hard when he got good leverage................

Cooney, Tangstadt.... They got hit and stayed hit.........

And Mike was very tough to nail.. Holmes in two fights had a hard time catching him........

I'd say there were plenty of people who felt Tyson would not go right through Spinks. Certainly, not many, if any at all, felt Tyson would win as quickly & easily as he did.

Most experts felt Tyson would win, but not until the halfway or latter part of the bout. Some even felt Spinks would win or would be leading on the scorecards at the halfway stage. So much for that!

It was sensational victory by Tyson who got to Spinks much, much quicker than people anticiapted. I remember, Reg Gutteridge stating that no way did he think Tyson would score another first round KO, especially given that the opponent was a fighter of Spinks' calibre.

Mike channeled all his anger & agression towards Spinks, towards the bout. If only he would have been able to do this all the time!

Whic gives credence to the theory that you made it up to build up your favorite fighter in Camacho . Since if you acrually did put the effort in finding the magazine which supposedly exists you could prove you doubters wrong.

Camacho and Whitaker did spar before, though, and one time was said to have happened at the Kronk gym when Whitaker was still an amateur (it would have been 1983-ish), so it's entirely possible, considering where they were in their respective careers, that Camacho did get the better of Whitaker in sparring on that occasion.

Also, if I'm remembering correctly, the story was that the two had some bad blood after sparring each other with Camacho starting some extra stuff with Whitaker via a shove or something after the session was done.

The story I'm recalling of them sparring and the other stuff came out when they both appeared on the same card with each other back in the early 90's.

The story is Whitaker "beat the **** out of Camacho" when Whitaker was "all jet lagged and everything" at a time when Camacho was "at the top of his game"- Emanuel Steward :good

It was in Boxing Monthly a couple years ago.

I've seen it reported in Fist Magazine that "even bfore lifting Olympic Gold, he (Whitaker) outclassed Hector Camacho in sparring." - Gavin Evans :good

greg page knocked tyson down pretty hard in sparring. maybe thats who ya talking about.

i think your right that it would of been far more publicised. i remember the back pages being taken over with boxing when eubank was knokced down by a complete nobody...a guy who had never boxed or had an athletic career in his life. but caught chris and knocked him down...

yet Michael Bentt got koed horribly before his fight wth Herbie Hide and no one said a word until now

Curtis Parker reportedly beat up on Michael Spinks so bad one time, that the next day he didn't show up to spar.

If memory serves, Spinks main sparring partner for the bout was Alex Stewart. It wasn't easy finding guys to emulate the Tyson style, but that guy was never going to be the right choice. Maybe somewhat dangerous, but not in the same ballpark with the guy he was going to be facing. The other guys I don't recall, but were nothing special and Futch was not going to have his guy in wars everday before climbing in the ring with Tyson anyway.
