But you must remember Qawi was on his mid to later thirties when he fought Spinks, Braxton started boxing late.

Like I said, you have to work really hard to come up with any opponents Spinks even could have faced.

Jerry Martin was clearly exposed and outclassed by Mustafa Muhammad. I'm the biggest James Scott supporter on this board, I'd bet, and believe he would've spanked Saad or EMM in a rematch, but I can't see him being strong enough to stay with Spinks, despite the fact that Qawi couldn't even ruffle him over ten rounds. Rossman was well on the downside by 1982, wasn't he?

A prime John Conteh would've been the most interesting choice, it seems like.

I can't think of anyone else to even mention.

Yeah, but Conteh was eviscerated in the Saad rematch, and was pretty much done after that. You could make the case that he was already starting to slide prior to that point. Meanwhile, Spinks was still only about ten fights into his career at that point, and didn't really start to move into contention until just before Conteh-Saad II took place (that was when he defeated then fringe contender, and Rossman conqueror, Ramon Ranquello).

Spinks did meet Conteh's brother in August 1980, but by that point John had already fought what turned out to be his last fight. Even if one assumes that JOhn might have come back to gain revenge, Spinks was at the point where he was about ready to defeat Lopez and Johnson. So, by the time Spinks could have met Conteh, it probably wouldn't have been pretty to watch.

Which just goes to lend further credence to your point.

It was a what-if scenerio. IF Eddie had had his head on straight, been more aggressive, and trained properly he would have been a better fighter than Spinks (and many other HOF'ers)
Boxer.....puncher....iron chin (nobody stops a prime Eddie) he had it all and IMO pissed away his chance at all-time greatness...

It's not really overrated, Spinks' resume is a top ten resume, he beat Braxton, Musata Muhammad, Lopez, Johnson, and BOTH Davis brothers.Pretty damn good, if you ask me.

He fought the best of his times and not really weak, some decent Light-heavyweight talent, also in Spinks 1st fight as a Heavyweight he beat Holmes pretty clearly IMO so that adds to his light heavyweight resume with some icing
