Not really a good comparison. Carl Williams had a weakness for getting decked by left hooks his entire career. This was something Weaver was able to capitalize on but wouldn’t be as valuable of a weapon against Spinks.

Mike had a terrific right hand, too. Ask Coetzee. Wow.

I have no problem with anyone picking Weaver to beat Spinks in his heavyweight rendition. I might even make the same call. I just thought comparing Williams to Spinks was a tad odd.

All in all, I've been watching a lot of Weaver over the past week and have come to the conclusion that not only was he at one point (perhaps 79 to 81) the second best heavy in the world, but overall a really good fighter who might have made a top 30 ATG list had he beaten Thomas for a second title (I mean, he was doing awfully good before that ironic one punch ko.)

I respect Mike a lot more than I did back in the day. He had near Tyson-level explosive power and a very underappreciated jab...he just went through bizarre seques where all he did was follow the opponent around and do relatively little. It's as if he had ADD, he had trouble sustaining an attack more often than not.

Still, a fine warrior, and he wouldn't have been slaughtered in the 70s and 90s imo.
