Spinks' right cross was the second most powerful punch in the history of 175, surpassed only by Foster's left hook.

I remember watching that on television. Short fights on Wide World of Sports or its equivalent on the other network could be very frustrating. The listing in the paper would say boxing at 1 pm but first you would get dog racing and midget bodybuilding and God knows what else. Finally the fight would start at 230 and if it was a short, one sided fight, it could be exasperating.

They should have had a midget bodybuilder fight Michael Spinks.

Watched it arbritrarily last night - very nice right hand against, let's be honest, very weak opposition.

That's not a comment on Spinks's title reign in general though because, except for his last two defenses in 1985, he faced a very high caliber of challenger.

    LOL. No he didn't.

In fact, literally EVERYTHING suggests the opposite.

Spinks stopped Lopez, Marvin Johnson, Vonzell Johnson, and Murray Sutherland quicker and more emphatically than Saad.

Hell, both Saad and Eddie MM had to hit Marvin Johnson with the kitchen sink to stop him. Spinks renders him literally unconscious with one punch.

And Spinks hurt Qawi - Saad couldn't phase Qawi in the least bit.

So, you're wrong. Spinks was a bigger puncher than Saad.

If Saad has a case over Spinks as a puncher, I'd LOVE to hear it... cause he doesn't.

Spinks quality of opposition was pretty low after the Qawi unification. Davis was the only real test. The division wasnt as strong as it had been a few years earlier.

I watched it live when it aired, nice to see it again. I love listening to the insufferable Ferdie Pacheco get asked about Spinks' chances with the proposed jump to meet Holmes. "No chance" says Ferdie.

Well on paper his comments made sense I suppose.

Its true Spinks stopped those guys faster but he also stopped them AFTER Saad had stopped them - in the cases of Lopez and Marvin Johnson twice each.

Saad and Spinks both had great power.

    Saad

One punch stoppages of Richie Kates, Pete McIntyre, Lottie Mwale, Murray Sutherland' Jerry Martin and Louis Pergaud

    Spinks

One punch stoppages of Marvin Johnson, Vonzell Johnson. Jerry Celestine and David Sears

    Both great punchers.

Yeah Ferdie was in the majority. Spinks weighed 170 for Sears. It looked like suicide for Spinks to go against Larry.

The keys were Spinks put on weight through proper condotioning and had a great game plan against Holmes.

Spinks ability to adapt to different styles was underrated.

Why the complete and utter disrespect for Michael Spinks.

The man is revered as a great champion but on this forum you and many others constantly talk him down, even now suggesting he isn't a power puncher.
