Repeat of the Ortiz two rematch where Spinks could be outboxing Wilder, moving around the ring with his awkward style till Wilder lands the right hand and immediately ending the fight

I agree but I think Michael avoids the right hand . If you only have the right hand, it is hard to beat a great fighter.

The second fight was a robbery. I scored the first one by 1 point for Holmes but have no problem with Spinks winning a close one.

A couple of publications did score the second for Spinks and put forward an extended case. My feeling back then was that Spinks give away too many early rounds. I thought Holmes looked like he was 45 in the first fight. He was much much better in the second.

These would be interesting to watch again and score. Lets see if Kev and PF did threads on them.

Height, weight and reach difference here IMO, Wilder TKO 9 or 10. Both have career embarrassing loses to overcome I just think a little bravery from Wilder would go a long way.

Michael fought Gerry Cooney who is similar to Deontay wilder and Spinks beat the **** out of him.

Cooney never held a world title, much less held it for five years. He never even came close.

Older post I made from the last time I scored the 2nd fight.

Spinks actually outlanded Holmes if you look at the final punch stat numbers. I know you don’t judge a fight by the punch stat but I’m just stating facts. I feel like over time people forget this was a close fight. Holmes started off sensational in the 2nd fight, he easily won the first 4 rounds. I gave Spinks the 5th and 6th. Holmes the 7th, Spinks the 8th, Holmes the 9th. Spinks took the 10th and 11th. I scored the 12th even. Spinks took the 13th. The 14th is tricky Spinks dominated the round but got hurt badly with a right hand toward the end, but was already back firing combinations before the bell rang to end the 14th. Spinks won the 15th round. I scored the 14th even. My score was 144-143 Spinks. Flip either of my even rounds to Holmes and he wins.

I agree with the poster who said Spinks would probably always trouble Holmes, style wise he’s a bit of a nightmare unless you could bulldoze him like only Prime Tyson did. Holmes was never the bulldozer that prime Tyson was. But Holmes is a legit ATG HW and in his Prime I’d say he may possibly stop Spinks late if he gets to pumping in enough of those right crosses the referee may have to rescue Michael Spinks. Spinks was a marvel of conditioning though, and insanely awkward, very hard to pin down so it’s quite possible he makes it the full 15, either way I think he loses to Prime Holmes.

He still has a better resume than Wilder.

Really good post my friend. The thing is...I can't see the Holmes who stopped Ali doing anything but wiping the floor with Spinks within the first 7 rounds, max. Holmes most often stalked Ali that whole fight, and though he obviously held back some during multiple occasions, he looked like a guy who actually COULD steamroll an overblown light heavyweight. I think Spinks would have been overwhelmed...though I have utmost regard and admiration for prime Holyfield, I think he wouldn't have lasted much longer than that.

It's true, Larry wasn't a great puncher, and his left hook was most often just there. But in 1980 he was coming down off his toes more, stepping into the right, and when provoked could seem at least borderline murderous (watch the fight with Leon, where Larry just got fed up).

I'm one of those who think that he always troubles Holmes for the reasons stated.

Coney fought Spinks in 1987 I think, do you really think Cooney ever had any fight left in him after the Holmes fight? Cooney fought Spinks for food money and nothing else. IMO Wilder would come with more fight and heart then Michael and Wilder physical advantage would win the day.

Spinks landed 296 of 680 punches (43%) while Holmes connected on 293 of 724 (40%). Holmes throw more punches and landed the harder punches which is something the judges didn't score correctly. Spinks landed just 3 more total punches.

Holmes hurt Spinks in the 14th and 15th rounds.

I can not understand how anybody would score it for Spinks.A complete robbery. At the time, on overwhelming majority of the media scored it for Holmes (only 3 out of 45 had it for Spinks)

You should score it sometime. I’d love to see your round by round scoring. I’m often surprised when I actually put the points on paper. I’ve Watched fights that I thought live were bad decisions and then when I actually scored them they were much closer than I originally thought. I was around during the time and still have many of the magazines that covered the fight and I see scorecards from both sides, but most all of them are close.
