This fight was weeks away from happening in September of 1984. Who, how and why? As a side note, in rematches Ive always had the loser of the first bout as a sentimental favorite for some reason. Im not going to say who'd won here because I want to leave it up to you, however. So this sentiment is not to mean I think the loser of the first match will win!
I think Spinks wins again, he outboxed him pretty convincingly and Qawi was unable to assert himself as Spinks hit harder as well, recall he hurt him right at the start. This seemed to make Qawi hesitant. Dwight is a great light heavyweight. Spinks arguably a top 3 all time light heavyweight. Spinks should win a competitive but clear decision again, similar to the 145-140 type scores of the first fight.
I was so hot for this. Qawi claimed some big excuses and i looked forward to a clash that would sort any dispute. I think Spinks would have decisioned him again but he'd have had to work for it. Qawi had some top performances after fighting Spinks so it's not like he dropped off and nor did Spinks find another level. Spinks fought the perfect fight first time around and if anyone had room for improvement it was Qawi. By the same if he got more aggressive he still have the danger of Spinks horrific ATG power in both mitts.
John, do you remember what excuses Qawi gave postfight for why he was beaten? Just interested to hear.
Per the below Jel. Spinks lost his wife just before the fight as well. As for Qawi, he had been diagnosed with pneumonia a week before the fight and he was strongly advised not to fight. Qawi was also nursing a damaged septum during the biggest fight of his career. Source: 40 Years Ago: Michael Spinks Vs.
