What would have happened if Spinks had given a rematch? Would the result have been different? Quawi didn't seem to put as much pressure as he normally does in thier fight.

The first fight in 1983 fizzled in fireworks..... Spinks was very technical, while Qawi was passive / too respectful.... The HBO fight stunk.... A rematch wouldn't have been very marketable soon after.... Anyway, Qawi could NEVER beat Michael Spinks....... MR.BILL

I also have the '86 Cruiserweight title fight between Qawi and Leon Spinks. Poor Leon had NOTHING left in the gas tank at 190 pounds... Leon Spinks looked and fought like a clustered f@#k for the six rounds that Qawi tortured him for.... Mills Lane halted the action....

At Lightheavy Spinks had the tools to always win, IMO.

Poor Leon. Qawi almost killed him.

As for a rematch between Michael and Dwight, probably another tactical, boring decision win for Michael.

I was PISSED when Eddie M. Muhammad weighed-in at 177 1/2 pounds for his July of '83 rematch with Michael Spinks.... Muhammad refused to go to the sauna / spa and drop off the excess 2 1/2 pounds to make 175..... I lost a lotta' respect for lazy Eddie from that point onward.... Eddie M. Muhammad did prove to be a good fighter back in his time, but never great.... In my view of things, "Spinks & Qawi" totally surpass E.M.M. in the greatness area...

Qawi's demons had caught up with him post Spinks, I think a rematch sees Spinks winning even easier, maybe even stopping Qawi late.

Qawi was slightly older than Michael Spinks, and thus, burned out earlier too...... Qawi was pretty much done as a serious contender after getting smoked by Holy in the '87 rematch..... Spinks was done in '88 after getting iced by Mike Tyson on PPV.... BUT! I get the feeling that Michael Spinks still had plenty of fight left in him, but the 13 million dollar payday he got from Tyson helped keep him outta the ring.... Peace...

Qawi was tentative because he had trained for a Spinks that would launch his vaunted right hand. Qawi made a career out of rocking back on his foot the precise moment a fighter threw the right, then he'd come over the top with his right hand.

Qawi never had a chance - he was facing BOTH Spinks AND Eddie Futch.

Spinks held back on the right, used his jab, used it some more, occasionally turned it over into a hook, then jabbed some more. Qawi had no openings and Spinks essentially shut him down.

The rematch would have been the same.

YES! Futch and Spinks devised the perfect game plan to off-set Qawi's attack and go on to win this stinker on points... Futch had Spinks doing plenty of moving and jabbing all fight long... The "Spinks Jinx" was hardly a major weapon in this fight, as Spinks threw the shot only on rare occasions..... This '83 unification was a stinker / sleeper...

I think the Spinks-Qawi fight is a very underrated fight. It wasn't a slugfest, but it still was a spirited fight IMO, even if a bit tactical. Spinks did deter Qawi from going in and fighting his preferred style of fight, but I still thought Qawi gave him a good fight and gave a good account of himself. I didn't think it was entirely a dominant performance by Spinks, or an embarassing loss for Qawi, as so many people make it out to be.

It was a principle issue for Eddie. The scales were inaccurate. Bert Sugar even wrote in Ring that he checked them himself and found them inaccurate. EMM would have been 175 on accurate scales, why should he have sweated down further?

The fight with Spinks was the first time in which Qawi really fought with a lotta' respect for his opponent. Qawi fought like he knew Spinks' right / jinx might just lay-him-out if he got tagged... Qawi claimed a cold sapped his stamina, but that was bullcrap.... Qawi was well aware that Spinks was the BEST 175 pounder in the world in 1983... Cheers...
